Mistake made with "the plans" Macguffin

So, we know the plans fit on something the size of a CD case. We couldn't have had the pilot smuggle them out when he defected? Wouldn't that have made the whole think simpler to tag them onto the holographic message?

That would mean the pilot would have known about the Death Star and its plans before anyone else did. 

not to mention ramming that thing into R2D2..

The plans were not "beamed" aboard the Tantive IV. That makes the entire film non canon, so that is the biggest mistake in this poorly thought out fan-fiction with a "cool" added Darth Vader scene to help you not think about it.
