do you have to be black/american to find this funny?

a good 1/3 into the first episode and it just doesn't seem to be doing anything for me.

do you have to be black/american to find this funny?

reply

No.

Let's be realistic; it would definitely help a great deal, especially in regard to understanding the cultural references, as well as "use" of language..... but this show missed the funny mark completely.

reply

Let's be realistic. No. You don't have to be black to like this show, and you also don't have to have been initiated into the "mystic secrets" of black culture.

Janet! Donkeys!

i'm a white canadian kid who loves hockey, but i completely understand the humor behind it (i also am a huge fan of the boondocks)and love hip hop so i guess that helps. honestly just the fact that he's actually jesus is hilarious in itself

The show also has a similar feel to Trailer Park Boys. :)

reply

It's the same creator, mike clattenburg.

reply

Yeah, I looked him up and found out that he's... gasp!... a Canadian white boy. I'm not familiar with that programme, so unfortunately I saw this and immediately thought "hey, McGruder's back." And I expected more of his humour and aesthetic to be present

Look, two things flaming at the same time.

It really does feel like Trailer Park Boys. It's the same 'ragtag crew of misfits getting into low level criminal hijinx' vibe.

reply

Well, no wonder. It's directed by Mike Clattenburg. There's a lot of similarities and this is basically Trailer Park Boys US.

Urban African-American culture is pop culture nowadays.

So you just have to be proficient in American pop culture to "get it".

I guess this show falls into the "Blacksploitation" category, but the jokes are funny(or not) no matter what colour your skin is.

A lot of it is genuinely not funny, but there are a few really funny moments that almost make it worth watching.

The whole "Jesus" gimmick reminds me of that sit-com "Cavemen" from way back, different gimmick, but similar ridiculous twist on the usual sit-com formula. It only lasted one short season and was never released on DVD, if you were wondering.
I predict a similar fate for this show.

update:I got all the way to the end, guess I was expecting more bruce almighty less "da hood, yo!" it did get a little better towards the end maybe got a smirk or 2 out of me but doubt I would watch this any further, some really cringe worthy lines.

thanks

I could be taking this too seriously but as a black woman I find it offensive since for once we have a show/movie where Jesus is being portrayed as black but yet it's a comedy. I'm surprised others don't see it that way

The only way it can take itself seriously is by being a comedy.

Imagine doing a drama about Black Santa or Black Easter Bunny. It just wouldn't work because of the whole fictitious character issue.

I'm surprised others don't see it that way

Others may be more inclined to take this whole son-of-god thing with a grain of salt. Also, the original Christ figure - it has been theorized - was really into herbs and mind expansion... so it's not that far off the mark, history-wise.

I'm African American and the show was not funny because the show is simply not funny. If you have to be a certain gender it race or anything eke and no one gets it but you cause you tend to look like you fit the bill..... it shows how stupid it really actually is instead of funny. The boondocks on the other hand is funny. And everyone agree on that.

reply

Naw. I have online white friends that were laughing their asses off at the premiere. It was made by the creator of The Boondocks and Trailer Park Boys, so I knew it would be funny.
