Why does everybody hate the kids?
I thought they were awesome. Maybe I'm the only one...
shareOther than the boy's rapping, they were both likeable.
shareNo you're not, I thought they were excellent as the frightened 'grand children'.
It's all a deep end.
Nope. I loved them, and loved the writers for them. Hardly any films ever take this kind of trouble to make real people out of kids. I was amazed. Totally expected a schlock kind of thing with flat characters, and then this happened.
In fact, that attention to the kids' characters was what made anything matter at all once the horror really started. If the victims are just ciphers, nothing really matters.
I was surprised by how much I liked them. They were adorable and their relationship felt real.
"What race are you? If you don't tell me I'll just...assume the worst."
Of all the problems I had with this movie, the kids weren't among them (sans some dodgy rapping). They acted a bit more mature than what most do at that age, but that's not exclusive to this movie. Happens with movie-kids everywhere, and far more obnoxious.
shareNot a big fan of rapping in general but I thought the boy looked charming in a cute sort of way doing it. I really loved how well the characters of the grandkids was written and potrayed on screen. That was the only reason why I wanted to watch this till the end, because I was concerned about their well being.
My biggest gripes were some avoidable inconsistencies with the characteriszations of the mother and children:
1) The mother portrayed by Kathryn Hahn, comes off as a loving, caring woman but I just can't believe that such a mother or any parent for that matter in their right senses would just send their kids off to their estranged parents house for the very first time, alone by themselves and then go vacationing to the *beep* carribbean. It was just blind luck that the kids survived until the mother got back to america. If the "grand parents" lost it a day earlier, it would have been a sad, painful ending for the kids.
2) The kids both of them comes off as smart, smarter than the ludicrously stupid victims that we are used to seeing in horror films. I think if I were in their position, the warning bells would have gones off the moment I saw the "granddad" with the barrel of his gun pointed down his throat. And the moment that I discovered that they weren't my real grandparents, I would have just made a run for it to the nearest police station and would have taken my younger brother with me.
Was wondering something. If this happened in real life, do you think the child services might intervene and consider taking the kids away from the mother? Her actions put her kids in extreme danger!! Either way, the kids and her are most certainly scarred for life.
The girl was okay...I had no problem with her. The boy though...and his dumbass rapping! Oh my God that was atrocious. What were they thinking with that *beep* I'm probably going to lower my original IMDB rating solely because his rapping really made me hate him more the second time around.
