Favourite and least favourite Saw film

I would also like to hear your guys favourite and least favourite Saw film also :)
Favourite: Saw Vi
I dont know what it was about 6 but i just really enjoyed it.I liked Williams test and i thought the flashbacks were a lot more meaningful than 5.

Least Favourite:Saw 3D Saw V a close second

Need i say anything?

My favorite would definitely have to be the first sequel, Saw II. I can still remember the theater shock from all the great twists at the end including the character development of Amanda and her revelation as an accomplice.

I was only 14 at the time and that really blew me away.

As for least favorite, I agree about Saw VII. Easily the worst in my opinion and especially unimpressive after VI. Even more disappointing is the fact it was the finale too.

My favourite changes every day between VI, III, and I. Least favourite is 3D for sure.

Poor greutert :D

reply

Not Greuterts fault. Lionsgate forced into it haha. He did a fantastic job with Saw VI, not to mention his editing on every other Saw film

With 2 weeks to rewrite a script i think he did okay

Saw 1 = Intense, tough, obscure, surprising and with a shocking twist!

Saw 2= Brutal opening trap, powerful performances ( Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith and Donnie Wahlberg ) and the time twist really surprised me.

Saw 3= Focused way too much on suffering, gore and torture. It was simply way too much. It tried to be more that what it was really meant to be.

Saw 4= That one was a mess, lol. Parts happened after Saw 3 ( autopsy ), parts happened during Saw 3 ( Rigg's game overall ) and parts happened before Saw 3. Another time twist ( a very cheap trick by the way ) and another apprentice proved the originality was over.

Saw 5= A surprise in my view. It tried to focus on the plot and even on events from previous movies, including flashbacks. It was quite linear and a good improvement after the mess called Saw 4. No twist ( let's be honest, Strahm being framed wasn't a twist at all ). By the way, Hoffman was s son of a bitch.

Saw 6= This is what Saw 3 should have been. It managed to mix traps, gore, story, plot and flashbacks in 90 minutes. I can't believe, but they did it really well. It's easily one of the best sequels in the series. It wrapped up a lot of things and if they had killed Hoffman, it could have been a great finale.

Saw 7 ( 3D )= It starts well ( Gordon's scene was epic ), then it gets silly ( public trap looked like fake ), then it gets great again ( showing Hoffman after Saw 6 finale ), then it gets silly again ( Jill's dream ), then it gets interesting again ( Gordon and the survivores talking about their experiences ), then the movie goes full retard mode ( Bobby's entire game ) and never recovers until the last 5 minutes with the bathroom and Hoffman being chained. Oh, and Tobin Bell got only 3 minutes and half of screentime, which is a damn crime.

Saw 3 and 3D ( they both share a 3, which is odd ) are the least watchable, but sometimes I get to watch them when I don't have anything better to do. All in all, I hope Saw Legacy proves to be a much better experience than that one.

Favorite: Saw III... Yes, I'm shocked, but Saw III actually has taken the place as my favorite entry in the series. And for good reason- it's a fantastic sequel, and a darned good film that does just about everything right. It explores characters and story in a magnificent way, analyzes the flaws of the human condition and the extremes some people will go to, humanizes everyone in such a fantastic fashion and top top it off... has some wonderfully twisted sequences of suspense. And it's well-directed, boasts a wonderful score and did such a good job with its construction, that basically every film after followed its pattern and the series "archetypes" it established. For a long time, I was adamant that the first film HAD to be the best, but going back with an open mind- no, I have to say that this entry was the best in the series.

Least Favorite: Saw 3D/The Final Chapter... Oh boy. I fooled myself into thinking that it was "alright" when it first came out, but time and a more critical eye have revealed more and more of the flaws it has. Honestly, there are some elements in the film that work. But too many just don't. Especially sequences revolving around new characters like Gibson.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

reply

The first Saw was definitely my favorite. Mostly due to how original everything was. I didn't know what to expect and it is epic because of that.

The worst is Saw 3D in my opinion. Meh. Don't even have anything to say about it.

Looking forward to this reboot but, hopefully they don't just add a bunch of new traps and call it a movie. Get a good story written.

The last 3 were all not good, for different reasons.

7. Just a bit too trap-happy with little story. And the traps did get to be a bit too ridiculous. And listening to the DVD commentary, they mention that traps was the main and important part -rather than any story. Which is why Bobby is the first Saw protagonist who failed to save anyone in any of the traps. As mentioned, if he saved people, you couldn't see the traps go off -which they said was the main point of the series.

4. I did like Rigg as a protagonist. But 4 was a bit of a cluster. It just seemed like there was way too much going on at such a fast pace. Sometimes it got confusing with all the jumping around.

5. Messed up in the opposite direction. It was boring as Hell. I didn't care about any of the people in the 5-man trap. And the film just didn't hold my attention. I started watching it, and by the end, I was only half-paying attention while it played in the background as I did other things.

Now the top ones I listed balance out nicely. There were good traps, but the traps didn't override the story. There did seem to be development on the characters and more focus on the flawed nature of people.

The only thing I have complaint about with Saw 6 is the bias with how damn near all the women live in the film, and it's just men who get killed. Anytime a trap had a man vs. woman, the women always lived. It was mentioned in the DVD commentary, though I forget who said one. One man asked whose idea it was to have only women live. And another replied that it was his (1st guy) because he wanted them to be kind to women on the film.

I think Gena was the only woman who died, and that was only because the Carousel only allowed for 2 saves, with 3 women. And I say this as a woman. It is just sad it many cases, women's lives tend to be seen as more valuable than men. Look at Jurassic Park. Men are killed constantly in that franchise. Then they have the first on-screen female death with Zara, and everyone is up in arms about it -how brutal and sad it was. I have seen worse. But because she's a hot woman, her dying automatically trumps everyone else's.

First one is always the best. I enjoyed Saw 6 very much, I thought it was a good story for William's main test and the FBI trying to find Hoffman's voice in the tape for Seth. Saw 2 and 3 were excellent in their stories too. Saw 4 just was flat and Rigg sucked as a main character. Saw 7 was bad and only reason why it's not dead last for me is cause Saw 5 was just completely terrible in every aspect. Saw 7 kinda ruined the franchise for me, but I choose to overlook all Dr. Gordon stuff. Saw 5 has no upside.

Favourites - 3 and 6.
3 - I loved the raw emotion and the conflicted protagonist fighting his demons - it added more texture than simply "a really nice guy tries to save everyone he can". The build up in the narrative using the traps kept the movie tight and gave the traps some relevance.

6 - Suddenly including a political movie n the series really surprised me. It worked really well as it's own story and within the larger story and John struggling with his condition. Again, the traps felt very relevant and not at all tacked on.

Least Favourite - 2 and 3D.
2 - Everything about it screams a shelved script that was rushed to production. It didn't feel like a Saw film at all to me, and everything felt really tacked on. Having traps intended for different people but everyone freely facing them together was really interesting, but people meeting their intended traps was always a coincidence and never built into the plot. Amanda and Obi were thrown at random into their traps by the muscle guy. The box trap girl (can't remember her name) stumbles upon that room alone by chance. It missed every opportunity to have a story so felt like a complete mess. The Amanda twist was okay, but felt like the scriptwriters forcing a twist in because the first one had a twist (M Night Shyamalan complex!). But still, the team were honing the idea down and deciding what tropes from the first film they wanted to maintain (tapes, pig mask, puppet) and what bits they wanted to drop (jigsaw pieces out of skin is the main one I can think of).

3D - It felt like boring wrapping everything up storyline + a load of random traps, finishing with showing the bear trap because that's what everyone had always wanted. Baiting the fans with what they wanted in a way that pleased no one.

The razor box trap that Addison stumbled on wasn't her trap. That trap was meant for the guy that was shot through the eye. And the key for the box was actually hanging on the wall. It was one of the easier traps, but Addison was delirious, and didn't bother to listen to instructions for the trap.

Addison's intended trap would have involved her having to mash her face against a hot iron, or something similar. It was gonna be something that marred her face, given her job as a prostitute and relying on her looks to make money and get by. So she's have to sacrifice her looks (face) to win the game.

And the trap Amanda was thrown into wasn't her's either. Amanda didn't have a trap. She was there to keep and eye on everyone, see if rules get followed, and to protect Daniel -most likely. The needle pit was Xavier's. But he was a coward, and didn't wanna face his own trap, so he threw Amanda in.

I think only Obi actually got his intended trap. Laura died from the gas. And Jonas was killed by Xavier -who was killed by Daniel. And that one guy was shot through the eye w/o getting to his trap.
