How do they know how to have sex? Plothole?

Are humans born with the knowledge of mating ritual, i.e. kissing, hugging, getting naked and inserting the male's penis in the female's vagina? Or have they seen some illegal porn movies? :)

There are many, many couples who don't have sex before marriage in some religions...I am sure they can figure it out..and still a few virgins on their wedding nights.

Although, typically, historically, the mother would talk to the daughter about things, and the father their son, so it wasn't as though they were going in blind, and remember, this used to be normal until the 1960's, even if people weren't always versions when they got married. I waited till I was was married, but I was not naive to what sex was for various reasons. Whereas, I had some friends who also waited until they were married, didn't ever watch porn or anything like that and ended up not really knowing how things worked cause no one ever explained it to them either, but to my understanding, they figured it out eventually. Also, I wouldn't say that is typical in reality, even in couples who wait until they are married.

Also, when you are married to someone and committed to them, there is plenty of time to learn, especially say 100 years ago (or before) when we had more free time (which seems ironic since we used to as a world, cook everything from scratch and build everything by hand, but things were not rushed). Typically though, I think their romance would have been even more clumsy than it was in the film if this were reality since no one knows anything about sex at all seemingly, but I felt the emotions were extremely well portrayed in the film, the anticipation, the longing, etc. The need to be with people, it is innate in our nature, we all need companionship, whether romantic or friendship,

The same way chickens and prairie dogs know how to have sex bro.

reply

When did prairie dogs start having sex with chickens? I musta missed that Attenborough documentary.

reply

Pmsl, now that response wj-n3 had me laughing out loud.

.

Instinct.

- What about being proud of being me ? -

How do you think the many people who never had even a clue about sex did it? They figured it out. Instinct, human nature. Nature takes it's natural course

reply

I beg to differ, but the only instinct of a human is to suckle. Everything else, including sex, is learned!

reply

Are you serious? How do animals know? Do you think dogs have some doggy porn they have been hiding from their owners and watching on the weekends? It's a natural desire.

reply

Doggy porn!   

Hey, cavemen figured it out somehow, and as a result here you are today thousands of generations later. Your existence actually solved your own question in a way.

Humans are one thing, animals are another thing. Many things animals do by instinct, humans must learn by watching other humans doing that and copying them. For example, animals can walk by instinct but human babies must be taught to walk upright, otherwise they will walk on their arms and knees/feet their whole life (so it seems that walking on four legs is instinctual).

The movie's premises are that they were never allowed to touch other human beings or watch other people touching/having sex.

Maybe they were taught about human reproduction at the anatomy class in school, so they got the idea about sex. Still, touching their mouths in a sex ritual named kissing is not taught in anatomy class and it's not instinctual. I really don't think that cavemen kissed each other.

reply

Hmm, interesting. Although I recall thinking about wanting to kiss girls way before learning anything about sex in school or otherwise. And of course later thinking about wanting to suck on boobs (and other areas) too, mostly before learning what sex actually is. Maybe I saw it in films/magazines and subconsciously wanted to copy it, even though I didnt know what it meant yet. But it might be more about wanting to use our mouths to discover things, isnt that what babies do first? Everything goes in their mouth, disgusting as it is, but they have no concept of clean yet.

I did not know about the whole babies needing to see others walking to walk, thats surprising. Guess humans are dumber off on instincts than animals, cant even do these basic things without being shown :X

reply

Not to bring your mom into it, but sucking on boobs is alll instinct, we all go for it right out of the womb.

Believe it or not, recent studies have demonstrated that babies sucking their dirty fingers and, particularly, eating their snot appears to be evolutionarily guided. With the dirty fingers they train their yet immature immune system into fighting various pathogens. And, quite surprisingly, the babies' snot was found to contain beneficial bacteria which were absent from anywhere else in the baby, and by eating them they relocate to their gut and start colonizing them.

These benevolent bacterial colonies then compete with potential pathogenic bacteria, steal their resources and starve them out. Think of it as a natural probiotic with targeted antibiotic effects. It appears that babies with very few of these good bacteria (because for example they are discouraged to eat their snot, suck their finger, or are given a pacifier very early) suffer more frequently from diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. Expect the pediatric instructions to change soon!

Your ignorance is actually amusing to me. How do you think the human population got started? There were no instructions eons and eons.

Accept the fact, that people do what comes naturally

reply

Oh honey, you forget that humans are animals as well. I grew up in Mormon Utah with zero sex education...Trust me, I figured it out.

Absolute hogwash, babies do not learn to walk by watching other humans.

reply

Humans are animals... we are apes. Those 'lower' instincts are still in us.

humans are animals....

I guess they knew to put the two parts together that feel good

reply

I should mention that I haven't seen the movie yet; but I get the general idea you're asking about.

Even if humans didn't have sex any more, and were not shown images or descriptions of human sex, they would still have some idea from other sources. For one thing, I assume animals would still exist, and people would be familiar with the mating of animals. For another, they would presumably be familiar with the concept of human sex from knowledge of their own history, as humans had always had sex and reproduced sexually prior to the new utopia. Knowing how animals mate, along with whatever fragments they had picked up about human sex, they would easily be able to put two and two together.

Again, I don't know if the movie established that sex isn't discussed, or left that subject open. Assuming it's not established either way, there's no reason to assume people of the Equals utopia avoided information on human sex - from the past. If they are designed not to feel emotions or sexual attraction, information about sex would be considered harmless. Maybe the couple were fairly familiar with the process, if only in theory.
