I hope they kill the Chrisjen Avasarala-character early in season 2 or at least have someone else play her instead of Shohreh Aghdashloo. Her poor acting brings nothing to the series. Just my opinion...
What you need to do with Avasarala is read the books, then imagine the character on TV with the same potty mouth :-). They do what they can get away with, but the character in the books is much better.
I'm listening to the audiobooks. Almost finishing Caliban's War and...I love Avassarala. The narrator is very good (I love his accent to her) and I totally imagine Shohreh Aghdashloo when I'm listening Avassarala's scenes.
Agreed. First off, I can't understand a *beep* thing she says. I find myself struggling constantly to make words out of those death-rattle sounds. It sounds like they took someone's lungs who died from smoking for 50 years, then transplanted them into a woman, and then the woman continued smoking for another 50 years with those lungs.
Voice-timber aside, her acting is so not right for this show. She seems like she doesn't understand her role or WTF is going on in the show. She takes me out of the moment in every scene she's in. You could swap her out and I wouldn't care at all. Re-cast her. It's that bad.
I like the actress but i can't desagree with you, i felt her acting being off several time. Now i can't say i want the character recast, i just hope she do more efforts next season, and as i understood the character in the books says a lot of profanity (ehrk, religion) and well, this is a show for adults she should be able to be as foul-mouthed than her character. Your lungs story cracked me up tho :) cheers
PS: If somebody could explain me why in the hell, adults cannot take bad language in a show? I donn't know if it's specific of the USA, but what the deal about sugar coating so much things? I'm not from the americas, my questions are genuine, thanks :)
Because the character is written like that. Simple enough. It gives a certain tone and personnality to "some" characters, i'm not saying it's mandatory in order to tell a story. In that case, i feel like it falls under useless and infantilizing censorship, which in my opinion is a bad thing and quite frankly insulting. Always answering questions by questions?
Well it's fiction, the whole thing is unnecessary. What you mean is that you don't like profanity. Good for you, but we're talking about a character in a show, not your personal hang ups.
Because people use bad language in real life and it takes all the realism out of it watching people tip toe around the words they are obviously trying to say.
But my point is that stories can be told well...by a good writer...without even going there.
Obviously, this is just a general observation, not an agreement with "cleaning up" a character that's already been written and "pretending" that she's not saying what she'd really like to.
The foul language she uses in the books stand in stark contrast to her physical stature. It's important to include that as it demonstrates the political clout she has. Whereas the politicians have to maintain proper etiquette, she, as an unelected, yet very powerful, representative, can cut through the bs, and give it to them loud and dirty, if need be.
I happen to like the character and I also like how the actress portrays the character. Bad acting? Hardly! First of all, do you think someone in her position is likely to emote all over the place? Not likely. Would you hold a man to the same emotional standard? She would very quickly learn "poker face" or not succeed at her "job" at all. It fits the character.
Secondly, as English is not her first language, most of what critics are (ignorantly) calling "bad acting" is her delivery style as filtered through her accent, not bad acting. Unless fluent in a non-native language, anyone is going to come across as more stilted and perhaps emphasize different words or phrases than a native speaker. Americans are so much more critical about that sort of thing simply because we lack the same exposure to non-native speakers as say, Europeans. It's not reasonable or fair.
One of the things I really like about the show is the exposure they are giving to non-white, non-American actors. Kudos. The mix of people on the ships, on the stations, on the planets and moons are probably a very realistic portrayal of our future as a species. The patois and the mix of languages and accents are also likely to be realistic--though perhaps accents will meld more than is portrayed--just as "American" accents have blended, with some persistent (but fading) regional differences. Those differences tend to disappear with travel, education and exposure to television as well as our tendency to move away from where we were born. It doesn't take very long either. I expect within the next 50 years they'll disappear completely.
I totally agree. I can understand her perfectly and her character strikes me as the non-emotional political type, so her acting fits for me. The rest of the show is too good to even care that much anyway.
Her acting is really off compared to everyone else... And that voice though, jesus christ what the hell is she saying? Can't even understand most of the thing she says. I was so put off by her that I had to skip her parts and read about her role on Expanse wiki. She definitely needs a recast in my honest opinion.
