About Gretchen's ass pulled depression...

I understand depression is a serious subject matter and you have to at least have a basic understanding of it to relate to something like that...

That being said, that's what it took Gretchen to become a shïtty character these last three episodes: seriously her so-called "depression" came out of nowhere with no set up whatsoever, and since then, she's been a total bummer and a boring character to watch, and her interactions with other characters is just cringeworthy and overall bad. Before that depression bullshït, she was a fine and well-developed character and capable of sustaining a toxic relationship with Jimmy and being more active than the emo-angsty crap-ass character she has become.

I'm enjoying the show but have to agree with this criticism. IRL a bout of depression really can come seemingly out of nowhere, but this isn't real life. In a show or film, that there was no hint of this previously makes it seem like a cheat - and it kind of is.

Pretty good portrait of depression, I've gotta give it credit for that, but the show was much more fun when Gretchen's worst emotional problem was severe immaturity.

Having had depression for almost 20 years it does come out of nowhere if you are not on meds and will stick around and make you just sleep and be boring and not feel anything or feel everything and it is one of the most frustrating things to deal with because everyone says they want to fix you or snap out of it. I thought she played it really well and it seems like she has really dealt with it or the writers have and the last episode of season 2 was great.

Now, let's say you and I go toe-to-toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor?

Does it also affect your ability to use punctuation?

Here's what I have issue with.

You mean it was great how Jimmy was able to fix her and she just snapped out of it?

reply

Cause you really thought from the last episode that she snapped out of it cause he fixed her!? (she hasn't, he didn't)

Depression is akin to a long journey on a heavy sea, an unending succession of relatively short highs and deep lows, paced by life's encounters and events. That's why you're more likely to end yourself when you can't connect with people (for various reasons) anymore and why you seemingly feel alive again after someone shows you a bit more than courteous empathy.

But it certainly doesn't cure you... and a while later you're back to drinking again, snorting various drugs and generally giving way to not so subtle self-abuse (spoilers for third season)
Seeing a shrink might guide you to calmer waters, scripts may also work to ease the pain (but you may also lose your edge!)

Now get off my lawn and go read a book or two!

So then why exactly did she say to Jimmy, "You fixed me."?

reply

Because... drumroll... 'The Heart Is a Dumb Dumb'

She feels better cause he stayed and didn't bang the skier (among other things) and yes, it's mainly thanks to him, so she tells him 'you fixed me', which is a callback to what they've been saying to each other for the most part of this season : 'you can't fix me!!'(Gretchen) '... and using my cunning ways, I'm gonna fix her'(Jimmy, approx.)

reply

Right. In other words, it was cr(p. They pulled the depression card out of nowhere and milked it all season. She kept going on and on about how he couldn't fix her, but just by him staying "he fixed her."

The first season was so much better, when they were unrepentant about being the worst. This season, they gave reasons/excuses as to why they are the way they are, like Jimmy's family being horrible to him, and it really hurt the show.

And, the "you fixed me" was probably the worst of it. For "proof" I use the fact that there were bunches of people here going on and on about how BRILLIANT and realistic it was, and that you can't just "fix" a person who is depressed. And then the day after the season ended, all you heard was crickets here.
