Will probably be the Dumb & Dumber To of the 2020s, sadly

The problem with waiting 2 or 3 decades to make a sequel to a comedy is because the actors have aged and it's next to impossible for them to still be funny when these characters are now in their 40s or 50s, versus when they were originally in their 20s or 30s. Age ruins a lot of people, sadly.

Nobody really wants another disappointing or bad sequel in the same vain as Caddyshack II, Blues Brothers 2000, or Dumb & Dumber To and it's just unfortune we might get another one of those.

It's not only age, some things just shouldn't be done - like sequels to Dumb & Dumber and Happy Gilmore. Would very likely have been guttertrash regardless of when they were made.

Dumb & Dumber To wasn't terrible, just very mediocre and the actors just couldn't pull it off anymore and they needed a better storyline, instead of rehashing the same one from 20 years prior. I liked some parts like the science convention about blackholes but I was left disappointed. It should've been made around 2001-2008, during the peak of comedy films and should've been more focused on crude humor than slipstick since that became outdated after the 90s. I mean waiting until 2014 was way too late and comedy was dying around that point in time. I think about 2015-2016 was the last time comedy films were still mainstream and still being theatrically released on an annual basis.

Also, today comedy is dying. It was declining badly in the second half of the 2010s. I think Ted and it's sequel was one of the only few memorable comedies from the 2010s. The start of the decade did have Hot Tub Time Machine, but that was basically "The Hangover meets Back To The Future" but it was still funny.

The 2000s had a shiton of good comedies: Scary Movie, Dude, Where's My Car?, Me, Myself, & Irene, Joe Dirt, Napoleon Dynamite, Zoolander, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, Wedding Crashers, Step Brothers, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Superbad, Borat, Dodgeball, Semi Pro, Stuck on You, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Bruce Almighty, The Pineapple Express, The Hangover, etc. It was a wonderful decade for comedies and caused a huge burnout in the next decade, because of the oversaturation.

The problem today is people are so damn easily offended nowadays and treat comedy like acts of terrorism. The world went to shit after 2012.

I agree. I absolutely love Happy Gilmore and Dumb & Dumber. I think they are all time great comedies, but they don't need sequels, especially decades later. Dumber & Dumber To was awful so I'm guessing this will be better than that. Imagine if Chris Farley was alive and he made Tommy Boy 2 where he has to save the factory and town again!

Like I said, Dumb & Dumber To was not awful, just mediocre and yes that still makes it bad. It was not a good sequel at all. Now Dumb & Dumberer and Blues Brothers 2000, those were truly awful and the D&D prequel was unfunny garbage and it's somehow getting a cult following, 21 years later. BB2K was a disgrace to a dead actor and D&DT didn't even stoop that low. I don't even like the music in the original BB, with the high screaming saxophone earrape, but at least that's still a good comedy, unlike BB2K.

What really makes D&D:WHML worse than it's 2014 sequel is the fact that just fails at comedy. Aside from maybe 1 or 2 jokes, it comes off as unfunny. The scenes with Bob Saget, okay those were funny. The scene with the short bus was kinda funny, too. The rest, not so much. The 80s setting is very inaccurate. Why is a 1990 song playing in a movie set in 1986? Yes, Ice Ice Baby is based off a Queen song from the 80s, but the song using the remixed sample is from 1990. Like imagine if Hot Tub Time Machine (also set in 1986) used M.C. Hammer's U Can't Touch This? It just doesn't work. Then we have the unfunny clichés of high school with the bullies and the teachers and the principal. Now this could've worked if Harry and Lloyd failed to understand how high school worked or tried to climb the social latter. One good thing I will say about the prequel is that the two actors actually look like a younger Carrey and Daniels. Other than that, it just fails as not only a comedy, but as a prequel. As bad as Dumb & Dumber To is, at least it never stooped as low to make fun of the mentally challenged minorities. Take it from someone with Autism, it sucks.

Yes, there was unfunny crap in D&DT. The scene with the old lady was "Seltzerberg" levels of unfunny. However, the scene with the blind kid from the original all grown up, the scene where the guy tried to kill the duo and got killed by a train, and the science convention scene were actually funny. So that's 3 funny scenes versus it's godawful prequel's two only funny scenes, so it's not "awful" just a mediocre and disappointing sequel. For it to be awful, it would have to have only 0-2 funny scenes. It's a 4/10, while the terrible 2003 prequel is easily a 2/10.

I thought it was awful. In the original they were senseless idiots, hence the humor. In the sequel they were just intentionally cruel, thus not funny. It's a 3/10 for me.

reply

The prequel was awful, trust me. It makes the sequel look like Monty Phython, by comparison

The prequel was mean spirited and more so than it's sequel. The bully was unfunny, the love interest was bland, the teachers and principal were just as bad of stereotypes as much as the bully. The only thing I liked was the dad (played by the late Bob Saget). I guess people are just as stupid as the characters from the 2003 prequel if they think it's better than it's 2014 sequel. There's no reason why it deserves any respect. It's one of the worst prequels ever made, alongside Casper: A Spirited Beginning (which is more of a remake than a prequel). At least Drop Dead Fred deserves it's cult status as a comedy.

reply

I never even mentioned the prequel, was talking about the original and the sequel.

reply

Well, avoid the prequel or else you'll find a slight appreciation for the sequel, compared to the prequel.

reply

I've seen it and yes it's worse than the sequel, but both are awful films imo. Just because the prequel is worse, doesn't make the sequel any better in my eyes. One's a smelly turd and the other's a slightly polished turd. Both terrible films that I doubt I'll ever watch again and it's probably been 20 years since I've seen the prequel.

The sequel actually may be more disappointing because of the cast.

reply

Good, you're not one of those people who says the prequel is better than sequel. At least D&DT is a D- compared to the prequel's F.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is also another truly awful sequel and that was one of those shitty direct to video ones. Be glad D&DT wasn't that.

reply

Zoolander 2 was a colossal disappointment.
I hope they don't screw this one up.

reply

Also, Anchorman 2 can be added to that list.
