Seriously! Questioning all of Ma's choices and everything! SHE didn't go through all this, Ma did! You can't judge someone who has been in such horrible circumstances.
I thought the reporter ridiculous, especially questioning Joy's decision to keep Jack. Joy's decision to keep Jack with her guaranteed Jack stayed alive. I don't believe for one moment that Old Nick would have risked his identity by bringing a baby boy to a hospital - there are cameras all over. If she would have handed Jack over to Old Nick, I'm positive he would have killed him and buried him some place. Joy did exactly the right thing in terrible circumstances and gave Jack as much love as a mother can give a child. I wanted to reach through the screen and smack the reporter!
You've never seen a Barbara Walters or Connie Chung interview, lol?!
The reporter in this movie is basically that type of TV interviewer -- they are deliberately manipulative in order to get a rise out of their interviewee, as it makes for "good TV."
They ask emotionally provocative questions, ask the "mean" questions in a "caring" way, etc. Ask things that will make the person cry, react, break down, get dramatic. It's all in the pursuit of audience numbers because the public knows if they tune in they will likely get to see some breakdowns and fireworks.
Her questions were indeed judgmental and mean, and of course later Ma was so shaken by having to reflect on that question that she tried to commit suicide.
