The last thing I saw was when she dropped by for a coffee and it seemed her husband was really trying to change her quirks and it doesn't leave her story in a good place. I'm wondering if there's more to her story after this for those who read the book. Or if anything more was mentioned of her in the series. Thanks.
Yeah it was heavily hinted at in the coffee scene that he was emotionally abusive that's why I hated they left her story at that point. I guess not everyone gets a happy ending.
One of the envelopes that Olive is putting stamps on before she plans to blow her brains out is addressed to a Denise McCarthy. Is that a different Denise?
The envelope one has a Texas address, whereas the last time Denise appeared she and Todd were in California (I think).
Wrong guy. Denise's husband was shot by his dark-haired hunting buddy. Jerry, her second husband, is the redheaded kid Mr Kittredge fixed her up with, in hopes she'd be well taken care of and he would be less tempted to maybe have an actual affair.
Yes and didn't he turn into a controlling freak. Denise was a sweet, naive, gentle person whose first husband seemed to nurture her but her second husband who started out as a quiet, shy individual without confidence changed into, well, someone like Olive.
I think Jerry, as others are pointing out in the thread, is emotionally abusive. But I remember him from the first episode, years earlier - and while Denise did fuss over Jerry, Henry was always somewhat absentmindedly dismissive of him.
Little hints like his announcing a 98 on a test score, and Henry complimenting him in a perfunctory manner. He always treated him as if he wasn't going to amount to anything. Even when he got a scholarship. Henry wasn't as thrilled about it yet he was so obviously gushing over Denise for every little thing.
I think Jerry, in a way, thought of that little visit as payback time for Henry looking back on his he had been dismissively treated.
Even so, it doesn't give him the right to be so rude to Henry and Olive. The "we're working on that" was getting on my nerves - Denise was so pretty during that scene but you can see the pain in her eyes - a tragedy in the making.
Both Denise and Henry fussed over Jerry getting a high test score. And had him join them at lunch and stuff. But then after Denise's husband died and Henry started coming close to actually becoming totally obsessed with her and having an affair (before he backed off) Jerry came in about school and the scholarship. And Henry was just way too distracted to dote. Denise was also too distracted to care about the school acceptance.
Henry would never be intentionally dismissive of anyone. And he also set Jerry and Denise up. So, if Jerry were a normal human being he'd understand.
There are different ways of praising. Henry may have encouraged him, and Denise was the type to also encourage - but the developing chemistry between Henry and Denise made them oblivious in a way.
Jerry's coup was that he came back successful and self-assured to the point where he told Henry he'd have probably negotiated a better deal for the sale of the pharmacy.
That later in life smugness seems typical of people who did not get enough attention when younger; Jerry's demeanor seemed to say "Who's better for her NOW?"
When Jerry came back to Henry's house after being married to Denise for years it wasn't to exact revenge on Henry. He had just evolved over the years into a greedy jerk who couldn't accept his wife and her quirks and was emotionally abusive to her. I'm sure he wasn't even aware his behaviour was inappropriate. He wasn't trying to rub it in Henry's face. He was just a jerk down to the core now.
Henry and Denise were never dismissive of Jerry. They were always supportive except when they had their own fights with each other and Jerry kept popping up at awkward times to tell them about his latest news. They were distracted and upset and could only muster obligatory congratulations.
There was never a 'who is better for her' race between Henry and Jerry. In fact Henry is the one who set Jerry up with Denise.
