Horror fans help me out!

I'm looking for some good horror movies but from the past decade if possible. I really liked AASB and am looking for something similar. There were a couple of good ones i can recall recently like "It Follows", "The Evil Dead" remake, "Conjuring" and so on...

Every list i try on Google seem to give me the same movies over and over again. Yes exorcist was great but I've seen it as well as all the other classic ones. I'm looking for something new that you would consider a good horror film.

I really like movies with surreal elements in them like what the Koreans do best.

Please help guys.

Sometimes it helps if you do more specific searches like "Best horror movies of 2005" and stuff like that. If you do "best horror movies" you are bound to get the same list over and over again like you mentioned.

The Pyramid is kind of similar if you really liked AASB, but not as good. The Descent is similar too.

You're right and i do these kind of searches often, the problem is that for instance "best horror movies of 2005" also lists Constantine and similar movies, having already seen it i know it's not a horror movie. But there are a lot of movies on those lists that are barely horror let alone good horror movies. These types of searches often give me results that are closer to "all the horror-ish movies of 2005". I've actually spent a considerable amount of time watching horror movies lately and it's getting harder and harder to find one that has that special feel to it, and sticks with me after. Most are just generic and bland copies of copies of copies. I really liked the vvitch for instance, it wasn't scary per se but it was really unsettling and it stands out among other recent movies...

a film i really liked from the last few years was Kill List (2011) check it out.
also i fun horror i loved was You're Next, really fun and cheesy and has the catchiest song in it ever!

I'll second "You're Next" (2011), all you need to understand about it is that it's not so much a horror/com as it is horror/black humour film.

Here's some films that I thought were at least decent since 2000:

May (2002)
Krampus (2015)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
The Descent (2005)
The Host (2006, Korea)
Don't breathe (2016)
It Follows (2014)
Pandorum (2009)
28 Days Later (2002)
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
The Devil's Rejects (2005)
Final Destination (2000)
Saw (2004)
The Mist (2007)
Slither (2006)
Trick 'r' Treat (2007)
Insidious (2010)
The Others (2001)
Let the Right One In (2008, Sweden)

i've seen You're Next and I loved it. Not exactly what I would called horror, thriller maybe but it was a fun movie and i really liked the fact that the main character was actually smart and capable instead of being another cheesy female trope.

I have checked out Kill List. It was good, entertaining and i loved the disturbing/uneasy atmosphere throughout the movie. Also the fact that you're left to interpret the movie yourself is always a plus for me.

There are so many bad recommendations in these replies...
But one person already mentioned the Descent. That's the one you should watch if you like AASB.

reply

Smart, strong, female character is a massive trope.

reply

Well it is and it isn't on one hand you have characters like Sydney Prescott, Ripley, Laurie Strode, Jennifer Hills etc. Who have these characteristics but have to struggle with whatever shocking plot movie throws at them until they get to a breaking point and kick ass from there on, usually when all the other characters have died already. Erin kicked ass from beginning til the end and the methodical way of thinking and eliminating villains is unusual for female roles, especially for a horror movie which actually helped her defeat several attackers let alone only one. Ghostface wouldn't have lasted 3 minutes if she was the protagonist in Scream.

Several horror movies that haven't been mentioned so far but I have enjoyed are:
Cassadaga (2011)
A Switchblade Romance (2003)
Hush (2008)
Sleep Tight (2011)

I will say that one of the best horrors that I have seen this year is Don't Breathe (2016).
