I'm not sure what her issue is here:-

Is it because wearing a fat suit is wrong because it could be perceived to be mocking fat people for their burden (which is outside of their control) even if the real life character she was portraying in the show was fat?

Or is it because she believed that the role should have been played by a real life person of fatness so they could bring a true authenticity to the role which she couldn't - and therefore she'd robbed a person of fatness the role?

reply

Being fat is not outside of someone's control. Diet and exercise exist.

reply

Possibly. But that in itself is a bigger debate.

I was more just speculating whether that was Sarah Paulson's belief whilst regretting wearing the fat suit.

reply

I don't understand why it would be a debate. There are plenty of success stories of people who were fat who found willpower and discipline in their lives and adjusted their diet and started exercising and became not-fat.

As for Paulson, everything is deemed offensive today so I'm not surprised she felt this also could be offensive. The article indicates that she thinks wearing a fat suit somehow increases "fat phobia." I get the feeling she thinks that, on the broad scale, someone who is not a member of a group that is commonly discriminated against should not pretend to be a member of that group on screen. Or at least she is thinking out loud on the question.

So she probably thinks that if a legitimately fat actress had played Tripp that would be fine.

reply

well , i had a skim of the article ... not much the wiser ... there was this:

“It’s very hard for me to talk about this without feeling like I’m making excuses,” Paulson told the Times. “There’s a lot of controversy around actors and fat suits, and I think that controversy is a legitimate one. I think fat phobia is real. I think to pretend otherwise causes further harm. And it is a very important conversation to be had.”

i guess we'd have to dig further to find this "controversy " she speaks of

I found this article which perhaps sheds further light:-
https://eu.usatoday.com/story/life/health-wellness/2021/09/02/sarah-paulson-linda-tripp-fat-suit-problematic-impeachment-american-crime-story/5666133001/

Experts say fat suits perpetuate biases against fat people – and beg the question of why thin actors are getting these roles.

"Why not just pick people that fit the range of actors and different body types that would be appropriate for this role?" asks Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, obesity medicine physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

So it genuinely appears that the issue is that the role should have been given to a person of fatness and that Sarah Paulson, with her slender figure privilege, had no right to take that part from an authentic voice of fatness.

reply

wow.
wheres that trend going to end?
If a ginger haired actor dyes their hair , are they stealing roles from non gingers ?

reply

I agree; it’s dumb. The mark of a good actor is their ability to make themselves believable as someone other than themselves. That’s the essence of their craft.

reply

It’s really gonna be a problem when you need an actor to portray a murderer.

reply

"mocking fat people for their burden (which is outside of their control)"

You don't seem to realize how people get fat. They shove more calories into their faces than they expend by exercising. Being fat is a choice, and can be reversed by taking responsibility and exerting some willpower.

reply

Possibly. But that in itself is a bigger debate.

I was more just speculating whether that was Sarah Paulson's belief whilst regretting wearing the fat suit.

reply

If she felt that strongly about it, why did she accept the role in the first place? I bet she doesn't regret the paycheck she collected for wearing the fatsuit. The self-righteous drip must be insufferable to be around.

reply

As a proud fat guy, let me tell you this is some of the dumbest SJW shit I've ever read.

reply

does she explain what her phrase "fat phobia" means?

are some people scared of fat people?

reply

its a made up libturd term. u are right phobia are ment to describe stuff ur scared of. people are not scared of fat people, more like grossed out or repulsed by them. if u were in a confined space with one then i could see where a fatphobia could be real but if ur in a open space and have room to get away from the fatty mcbumbalattie then there is no emotion of being scared present

reply

This is obviously a case of where the money mattered over the principle.

reply

this is the funniest shit i have ever seen lmfao hahahahahahhahahahahahaha. why did they hire a hot skinny actress and make her look fat and ugly. wouldnt it be cheaper to just hire a fat and ugly actress for 1/100th the price?!? i guess they didnt trust a fatty to have the acting chops for the role and went this route lol

reply

She says she regrets it, but I haven't heard about her giving the money back, or donating it to fat people charities. And I highly doubt she will turn down the sure fire Emmy nomination so that a "woman of weight" can have her spot instead.

This reminds me of when Scarlett Johansson was supposed to play a trans gender man in the movie Rub & Tug. It was a role and project that could have raised a lot of awareness and sympathy to struggles of the trans community. But there was such a back lash against a non transgender person, that she was forced to back out.

Has anyone seen this movie... probably not since it never came out. In 2020 it was redone to a tv show with an unknown trans actor in the lead. The pilot has not been picked up by any network or streaming service.

reply

fat people dont need charities. they have too much money already that is why they are fat. they need to be stripped of their own resources for their own good not given more lmfao

reply

"Fat phobia" Hahahahaha. Fatties do more harm to themselves just by being fat than some actor in a movie wearing a fat suit.
