Is it really possible that lawyers wouldn’t ask the juror what he did for a living? That’s like a standard question during jury selection
He probably did tell them that he ran a flower shop, which he does. He was a retired cop and they only asked what he does now.

The judge made it clear - the defense attorney blew it by not asking MORE. The guy answered what his CURRENT employment was and the defense attorney went no further. More on the ball attorneys ask all sorts of exploratory questions in jury selection, but not always. Also, in the movie, it was made clear of the caseload carried by public defenders, too. So it is easy to imagine how this was missed.
