Farewell My Digital Friends

To say this is B.S. is an immeasurable understatement. WTAF, I cannot limit my impressions of TVs and movies to 140 characters. Such limitation of critical thinking is what has propelled the world to absolutist, binary thinking and attitudes.

Farewell my digital friends. This has been such a great place for thoughtful, respectful sharing of perspectives on the art of visual medium.

Respect and regards, y'all!

There were so many times I'd come here to find out what song was playing at a particular part of a show or film. Or to see if others had the same reaction, or a different reaction, to a particular character or story arc. Or just for clarification on something I didn't catch. Or sometimes to provide that sort of information to someone else.

I don't know why I am so angry about this. It's not only because I've been a member for 10+ years but it's the genuine feedback you get from other users and not some critic snob pushing their opinions as gold!

I loved watching an episode of The Affair and coming on here to discuss what was shown, I got accustomed to some of the posters and would look forward to their opinions on an episode.

I'm cross with IMDB and as another user said, is this the goal of 2017 and onwards? Limiting spaces where people can genuinely comment about products without the involvement of some biased conglomerate?

reply

Same here. Been around here for 11+ years.
Not only I loved reading the opinions of people, doing so would make the wait for the next episode (and the next season!) less frustrating.

It's incredibly annoying, and "As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb" my ass. It's a completely obtuse and uncaring choice!

reply

You know what? They closed down the "proverbial water cooler".Remember when we were in offices (many of you still are) and we would stand around and talk about what happened on The Sopranos last night, or any of the multitude of shows that were playing then. That water cooler became IMDB. I never thought I would miss this as much as it seems I honestly will. 

I am going to miss this place a lot. I think part of it is that I don't know many people who watch the same shows that I like to watch. This site is the only venue for me to discuss these shows.

I agree. There are trolls (mostly males, Im afraid), who have made pornographic comments just to do it, and we're all paying the price. And attacking others' opinions/intelligence is just stupid. But my BIG question is what if you have a question/interpretation about a scene in an older show/movie. How can you get an answer?

pdbrat, *beep* you and your sexist notions.

Of course I was in the middle of a post commenting about this and my Firefox crashed.

I signed on the see this message about the boards, and I felt such a pit in my stomach. I have been coming here for 12 years.

I've been a member of some of the best boards with the best people especially Homeland, The Affair, and my all time favorite--Banshee.

The first thing I usually do after watching something is come to the board to read the comments, even if I don't participate. I will never post on Twitter and certainly can't imagine posting on FB. That's just not the same.

At least I guess I will still have the sites that do recaps and allow comments, but it's not like having the great discussions like here.

There used to be another wonderful site "Television without Pity" with great members but then that closed.

I can't imagine watching a movie or watching a show and not being able to come here and read the comments about it.

Unfortunately, in the 12 years I have been a member, I have seen in many ways what an ugly troll infested sewer many of the boards have become..like Politics and even Game of Thrones (I can only imagine how berserk they are over there right now.) They probably got tired of policing IMDB with the reporting and the trolls and the total lack of courtesy and civility between posters. Sad commentary how something that was once so great is now being taken away from us.

I wish all of you well. 

Oh my word... I feel the same. It sounds silly but I was attached to these boards... I don't know of anyone personally who watches movies or tv shows and would passionately discuss plots, direction, character development, continuity errors etc... IMDB message boards were my space, it was my enjoyable zone, it helped me connect with people who shared these interests as almost everyone I know watch movies and tv for enjoyment at the surface not to dissect the film like a novel... I like to dissect and discuss the film hence I'm here every other day.

Not everyone likes to take selfies and post every single detail of their life on Fb, IG and twitter... Geez, leave our IMDB space... It's a niche... At least let's peer review the comments and kick out the bad apples if the trolls caused the shut down.😖

I agree with every single thing you wrote SweetTea742.

This is the cherry on top of one of the saddest days of my life. I live in NYC and yesterday was 40 years I have been in my home..the longest place I have ever lived in my life. I love my neighborhood and I love my building but we've had a lot of change over the years because of the building of the 2nd Avenue subway and so much construction.

Today I found out that all of the stores across the street from my house (between a one block radius) that were all in small brownstones, have been sold and they are tearing it down to build a glass and chrome monstrosity that they will probably shove a bank in the bottom of because no one can afford the rents. It means that neighborhood stores, people I have known for 40 years, some who have become like family and friends, are going to be gone (and many sadly, out of work) It's the comfort of continuation, and then tonight I come here to IMDB, my other site that I visit sometimes 10 times a day just to check in for news, scanning boards, etc. is going to disappear.

I have met such really fantastic people here over the years (and at last count over the years aout 100 people on my block list). Coming here is my private, fun, special little "secret".

Most of my real life friends have no idea I post here and that's fine, because I certainly can't talk to them for hours about The Affair, but I have loved every minute of (even when I have had some less than stellar experiences, that's what the block list is for--most from the Game of Thrones board.). Wow, I can't believe how really sad I feel right now. I will miss so many of you.

Awwwww bridgetjones12002!!!

I am truly sorry about to hear that. It would have been better if at least one thing happened but not both! 😞

Apart from Previously.TV, I found AV club, do you guys know of it? Here's the link for The Affair S3 finale. I haven't checked it fully, so I'm not sure if it's as "intellectually stimulating" as IMDB boards, but, it's worth a shot.

I went to that site as I was binge watching the series, usually after I'd watched an episode, but occasionally before. The comments section on the finale is priceless. Much more scathing than a lot of the comments here, especially the French person's comment on the French dialogue between Juliette and the two women she met by the waterway, as well as the whole question of why Noah is presented as any sort of sexually attractive male. I never got that, even from the beginning.

I went to AV Club again and checked out the comments section of The Affair S3 finale and omg LOLLL!!! You're right skay_baltimore, the comments can be quite brutal but they're really funny. The hilarious comment section is akin to a fast food joint (everybody's there) whereas IMDB is a lot more focused on a niche crowd.

reply

Oh yes. I love AV club and thank you for the link. I shall book mark it.
I read AV Club
Vulture
NY Times (the comments are even better than the recaps LOL)
Several others. Usually on Monday morning I just go to Google and type in the affair, then go to NEWS, and then that's where I find a lot of the recaps. But I'm bookmarking them now.

So now instead of running across the street for everything, I will just order everything I need. From booze to toilet paper LOL)

Some of these sites get very good boards. They are more comments rather than long threads of the same thing, but the NY Times especially is very active with the Affair.

I think we will all eventually be able to find each other. especially if we go to that "Previously on site" and use our IMDB names.

Best luck to you SweetTea742, I know you were very new here (I'm almost sure) but you were always very lovely and kind and interesting. Wishing you all the best.

Thank You Bridget :-)

You too are very sweet and welcoming. It's nice to see that there are posters who don't trash you as a "Twilight Fan" because your opinions differ.

I completely empathise with how you're feeling Bridget... It warms my heart to know you hold IMDB so closely. I thought people would laugh at me or think I'm making a big deal about a message board on the internet but I feel as though my neighbourhood coffee shop was robbed and ransacked with nothing left but the damaged physical structure.

I may be new to actually posting on the message boards but I have been using IMDB since I was 13 years old. Back in 2003 was when my parents first bought a computer for my sister and me, we had no other choice but to share it. When it was my turn to use it, what an experience! Using a computer, having an email address, MSN messenger, MSN chat and browsing the net was new. Everything was fun and exciting online, but then I discovered my dear IMDB and the rest was history until the news broke yesterday. IMDB isn't just an internet site for me, it's a space that has been there with me from my preteen to teen to young adult and now adult years. A meeting place that I have been going to but can no longer go because it won't exist anymore.

I would keep my username for sure. If we're all forced to migrate, can we all pack up and move to the same place lol? 😆

And the the rest of The Affair gang who's names I can't recollect at the top of my head but whose posts I have read, loved and enjoyed many times. What you guys say? Where are we going? 😃

I'm so sorry, Bridget, and I too agree with everything SweetTea said.

Today has been a truly awful day for me too, and I've most of it spent it on the verge of tears for half of the day, due to circumstances in ways not too different from yours. which I won't go into. It's just been an awful, terrible, saddening day for me as well. As with you, learning that these boards, our great pleasure, were soon to be gone was pretty much the last straw for today. I know you know what I mean. Too much loss of meaningful things within too little a period of time.

(((hugs)))

reply

Oh cat...I'm sorry. I truly hope things will turn out okay for you.

Sometimes we come here (I know I do) not just to discuss movies or TV, but because we feel it's something bigger than us. A community of people that (if we've been here long enough) are like old time friends. And sometimes we can open up to each other about personal things more easily than we can to friends or family because here, with those that we know, we won't be judged.

I hope everything turns out to be okay for you. I'm getting older now, and loss for me sadly,is becoming a more common occurrence. People moving away, things changing, the world changing, loss of loved ones...the entire gamut. I always saw this place as a "constant", even though I have seen the changes here (an not always for the better) but just though it would go on.

My best to you. xoxoxo, B 

I whole heartedly agree, SweetTea. For some reason this is my fix. Some people have crack, some alcohol, some cheap whores, but I had my IMDb. It's my vice. In real life, I'm private and keep only a small group of friends. But here, this place is the stuff. I can't imagine it gone. Yes, I'll get a thousand percent more done, which I should--but hell, this truly sucks.

You'd especially think that Jeff Bezos, owner of The Washington Post, AND IMDB, would be aware of this and want to contribute less to that short kind of attention span if he wants people to actually read his newspaper. But he's doing the opposite by shutting down the boards.

Why don't you write to him and make that point?

I'm really going to miss you, Smelling-Salt, and Cotton Mouth, and so many others here. I'm too depressed to make a list, but I've enjoyed the discussions we've had so much, and I know you all know who you are. Things won't be the same without you.

Please be well, everyone! And find enjoyment in everything you do!

Thank's Centrd. Live up to your name and be well. I honestly believe that this is about monetizing board content as much as possible. Under its present construction, they cannot quantify and qualitatively plug the board content into algorithms that would yield market able data analyses. Why they don't redesign or re-vamp the board to accomplish this is beyond me.

It has been a distinct pleasure exchanging sometimes very palpable and relevant thoughts and insights with you all here. Thank you Centrd et al...
