Would have been better without Seth MacFarlame

Why they picked him to star in this is beyond me. They surrounded him with everything needed to put the movie over the top, and he reads lines as they're written, but he falls flat adding no comic value. Imagine Jack Black, Jason Alexander, or even Woody Allen in that role and it surely would have been a home run.

I also thought Seth was fine in this. Didn't see anything awful about his performance.

I am not a fan of SM or his work but I enjoyed this movie and thought it worked pretty well.

Seth wasn't the very best choice, but far from the worst. Jack Black is way too over the top and in your face; he's just not that funny, IMO. Alexander might've pulled it off. Even Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson or Hank Azaria might've been OK. Or, going another route, using an actor not generally connected with comedies may have worked...say Ben Affleck or Timothy Olyphant. Just some random thoughts

Yes, him and Ryan Reynolds should have swapped roles in this movie.

Interesting.

Disagree with this. Not really a Family Guy fan (found bits of series 4 pretty decent), but there was something about Seth MacFarlane's presence and wording that I found passably entertaining (enough to not instantly change channel when I happened across the film). Pretty much everything that made me laugh was from him, while I felt a lot of the other actors were quite unfunny and uptight.

It's like (though not as much) what Simon Pegg lends a movie. Find him oddly likeable though he clearly has an ego and quite entertaining.

Seth is a good voice actor, but a little bit wooden in front of the camera. Personally I think that Jason Biggs, Simon Pegg or even Jason Segal would have had more on-screen charisma and emotion added to the role.

However, I am a fan of Seth.

I really liked Seth MacFarlane in the lead role. To me he was supposed to be playing a modern type character set back in the wild west days (out of his element as another poster said) and in that regard Seth nailed it!

However, as soon as I read your suggestion of Jason Segal playing the lead role I could instantly imagine how the movie would have been even better! I think Segal would have been perfectly cast for that character.

Another actor I think would have done really well is Seth Rogan.

To be fair I could imagine Seth Rogen in the role as well

Seth can be good with writing, voice acting and stand-up comedy, but he should definitely not get any more ideas when it comes to live action acting.

Seth actually directed the movie, as well as co-write the script. Maybe he insisted on starring in it, as condition of doing these things?
