Would have been better without Seth MacFarlame

Why they picked him to star in this is beyond me. They surrounded him with everything needed to put the movie over the top, and he reads lines as they're written, but he falls flat adding no comic value. Imagine Jack Black, Jason Alexander, or even Woody Allen in that role and it surely would have been a home run.

My thoughts exactly. Seth MacFarland can't act.

I guess I don't see it. I thought he was pretty good. he just has a weird look

reply

I don't think he looked weird, he just acted a little weird. I thought he was passable as an actor, but I probably wouldn't advise him to pursue a full-time career in acting

Seth is a great voice actor, but acting on camera is very different. A more experience actor might have been better, but Seth better than I thought he would.

Well, it's Seth's project, you can't really blame him for sticking himself in there. It's kind of the next logical step after Ted. I'm just not sure that people were ready to buy into Seth McFarlane as a leading man. Especially when he casts himself opposite two of the hottest young women in Hollywood, it makes him look like an egomaniac.

I thought he did a good job, it just seemed kind of weird.

Agree with most here. Seth is a great comic writer, funny voice actor and good director so far...but throwing himself as the lead of this film wasn't such a hot idea and likely hurt the movie's box office. I agree with OP that Jack Black would've been almost PERFECT for this movie!

I think Seth just wanted to make out with Charlize :DD But on a serious note, I didn't find anything that awfull in his performance, but then again I saw it translated in my native language.

I actually found him to be nearly perfect in this role - not too over the top as Jack Black tends to act and not as downplayed as Woody Allen... and really? Jason Alexander? Really? I mean... I could have seen him as the bad guy, if they had played him for laughs like the whore and her man, (though I liked that Liam played him straight)

If someone else should have had Seths role, I would have chosen someone like Chris Klein, Kal Penn or, and I know I might be the only one thinking this, Rob Schneider - and honestly I don't know if they would do any better, and anyways; if it hadn't been Seth, then I couldn't have spent most of the movie thinking "Where did Brian get that human costume?"

PS.
Thank you for not suggesting Adam Sandler... At this point I would rather see a movie with Pauly Shore than the Sandman

I found him to be pretty great in this role. I'm a female in my 60's, and have admired Seth MacFarlane's comedic writing and skills for many years. I also love that Alan Jackson sings the movie's theme song. I can't get it out of my head, it's so catchy. I read that Seth wrote the lyrics for the theme song, and they are pretty damn hilarious! (I've watched the YouTube video of Alan Jackson singing "A Million Ways to Die" about 5 times!)

If you don't like Seth in this movie at least a sheep pissed in his face in one scene so you've got that going for you

Woody Allen starred in his own movies but he is a better writer and director.
