It may have been better but it was still riddled with major issues and I still think the movie would've ultimately ended up quite bad. From what I recall, the film set up Poe and Rey to be love interests, which is just as random as Rey and Finn. Also, the Tor Valium guy is supposed to have been the one to have trained Palpatine, even though Palpatine himself says that Darth Plagueis was the one who trained him.

The same thing that happened to the vaunted fanedits of the prequels. They never really existed in any vaguely legitimate form and had next to no impact on anyone except those that already approved of the narrative that fans could simply tailor the prequels into something amazing.
