there is no depth to star wars. you will think that after 40 years youl get a detailed explanation on why the rebels are the good guys and why the empire are the bad ones. they just fight in space over and over in every movie. there is no depth. no movie has actually shown the sith order. no movie has actually gone in depth about what this war all about. also. the acting in all star wars movies included the new ones are horrendus. this is a cartoonish and sily franchise that no one should ever take seariously. but unfortanetly you bunch of american nerds think its the best thing ever. how delusional can you be? this franchise is garbage. how can such outdated and sily clothes and uniforms and suits can be still used for today's times. have you looked at the stormtroopers lately? you cant look at them without laughing. have you look at the clothes of both the rebels and the empire officers? its a frikin joke. how can you stay blind to this cheese fest.
truth is this franchise was garbage from the start to the end and it only succseed because it was in the 70's where it had no compatition whatsoever. star trek yeah i can understand. but this? this is garbage. allwayes was.
and yet you pretend like it been destroyed when it was not even good from the first place
I kind of agree with what you're saying?
I think they were initially intended to be light and frothy 'popcorn' movies (especially the original in 1977) but it's success led to sequels, spin-offs, books and backstories....which tried to create a 'mythos' out of a whole lot of nothing?
The franchise is too big a cash-cow now to ever end quietly (or with dignity)....and the recent endless prequels/sequels/spin-off's are getting by on pure nostalgia-factor only.
Did you not see the prequels? It’s all about how Palpatine caused the war so he could take power and overthrow the Republic to start a new Sith Empire.
It was a simple tale well told. It was the mythic dimension of it which made it become so popular. Thing is the Star Wars myth is done, the tale is told, after this it's just going to be increasingly rehashed, watered-down versions of the same basic story.

Originally it was meant to emulate the old adventure serial films which featured cartoon strip heroes and villains but with a deeper message evoking allegories about the human condition and experience in this world. The original films were never completely serious though the perils faced by the characters in the narrative were. The idea was to entertain and that is what they do I think. That said, a proper treatment of the story's background would be interesting, but not like the Prequels which I feel served to diminish the ideas to some degree. We want to know why the characters and planetary systems of the current moment have become opposed to the Empire - what are their individual circumstances/scenarios, etc. We know it is a struggle between freedom and tyranny but why them?

That is pretty far from the truth. What about the performances of the likes of Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford or "Yoda"? Also, the series can't be outdated because it occurs in era that never existed - it's
fantasy. Yes, for sure it was invented in a certain era with certain opinions and tastes reflecting the 1970s, but those ideas and inventions of the film were very distinctive and detailed as far as visuals are concerned. An updated "look" would not improve Star Wars unless the ideas behind them were also commensurate with creativity and insight. There are plenty of films nowadays which look like cheap or redundant knockoffs of each other - minimal originality and with a view to profiteering.
That all said, there is a tendency for some fans to go overboard and worship movies that were really only special effects spectacles designed to entertain. They couldn't be more than that as entertainments. However, as narrative texts they can be regarded quite seriously for their literary and philosophical underpinnings and their role as modern versions of ancient fables and archetype stories.
it coincided with the personal computing revolution and the rise of nerd culture (from 1970s to today), which is now at it's most dominant...
That's why the backlash "on-line" has been so severe... the Disney changes to StarWars hit at the core of nerdism and geek mythology... it hit at the sense of being eternal boymen... it's like someone shat on their scripture...
the quality of the films were never that good... but they were never meant to be... all of the meaning ascribed to the films was simply a reflection of the rising social, economic and political power of nerds over the past 40 or so years...
My mom agrees with you. I just read this post to her. And yeah I understand like Star Wars has no purpose other than to show people killing each other in space. To their credit though the prequels did try to explain the back story and give explanations for why these people are doing what they're doing;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKm4ueVuxpY
But the sequel/remake trilogy just wants to repeat things and so if you were wanting something new they shouldn't have given ep 7 to Remake Abrams.
