Whats up with powerful Jedi's going into self imposed exile

...while everything turns to shit? So Luke pulls an Obi-Wan in the new trilogy. The difference being that the empire was already in power when Obi-Wan went on sabbatical. Here, its clearly kind of Lukes fault that Ben Solo went completely carrot top during his training and his response? Hide on an island while the little shit asserts his power. Did he really feel no sense of responsibility to go after him before Ren became the First Orders prized weapon or was he just like fuck it, I'm out? That's what really grinds my gears. I was hoping for a better reason as to why he was sitting this out

It's a common trope from the samurai films which SW always drew inspiration from.

I get that, and I understand how that works within the context of the original films, but under Luke's circumstances, it doesn't make much sense

I never thought of Luke as being someone who would run away. The whole point was that he was different from the others who failed at stopping the Sith. He would have stayed in the fight.

Agreed

They're just going with the standard "Damaged Hero" trope.

I think Luke made two mistakes:

- Assumed that he had full control of his training temple as his domain

- When the problem with Ben became developed was hamstrung by his ethic of not kiilling or assassinating unarmed people (or killing people he regarded as innocent players)

He realised Snoke had infiltrated Ben's mind but did not face that psychopath at the right time. It's unclear whether he could have stopped Ben when he started on the path of destruction - in a confrontation he may have had to kill him to stop him. Was Snoke devious enough to avoid confrontation with Luke had the latter tried to confront him? Or was Snoke always seeking out Luke to try and kill him?
