The "Do they think they're poisonous?" line came from Chicory. There was no clarification from the expert as to why the savages don't eat negroes.

My reading of it was that Chicory asking if they thought blacks were poisonous was an attempt at a joke, which the expert dismissed with contempt. It seemed apparent to me that they didn't eat black people because they thought them "different" (inferior maybe), which scared them, and made them not worth eating.
