What other musical artists should get a good biopic?

In the last ten years, we have seen Ray Charles and Johnny Cash get excellent biopics released, and James Brown and Gregg Allman will soon get theirs. Off the top of my head, I would love to see a big screen treatment of Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. Hank got something at least with that Henry Thomas movie, but it only portrayed the last few days of Hank's life. Elvis has had several TV treatments, with such talented actors as Kurt Russell and Jonathon Rhys-Meyers, but hasn't received a big screen biopic. Supposedly, Mick Jagger is trying to get something off the ground. I would also love to see Otis Redding get a movie, perhaps with Chiwetel Ejiofor.

What artists would you like to see?

I think Hollywood needs to leave the Black artists alone. There's Mile Davis and Marvin Gaye in the planning. Not to mention Whitney and Aliyah. And how many more rappers are going to be portrayed. I think their families are pushing for these movies because of the $$ involved. Aliyah's family is producing a movie -- but I don't know why. She didn't do anything!! She lived a short time, had a short career, does anybody care?
The Tupac Broadway show closed after 3 months -- that should tell Hollywood that some of these young rappers and hip-hoppers didn't do anything worth telling and they don't have an audience.

You don't see a lot of white artists biopics. As for Greg Allman -- what's his story? What has HE done besides get notoriety for being a druggie. It's like the Jim Morrison movie not a big Hollywood hit at all.

Hollywood just doesn't know when to quit. Since it's an industry its got to keep grinding out movies (or TV dramas) even if no one cares.

Hip Hop BIOPICS have an auidence, you just have to know how to tell the story. With that being said Run DMC's story which involves Hip Hop crossing over to WHITE AMERCIA, the murder of Jam Master Jay and Run's attempted suicide would make a great biopic. Staright Outta Compton the story of NWA comes out next summer and Tupac's story is looking like the tail end of 2015.

I would love to see a GOOD biopic on Michael Jackson. We did have the Jacksons TV mini series, which covered his early years, and the disastrous "Man in the Mirror" TV movie in 2004-which stank-but I'm talking a really GOOD quality theatrical biopic, one where the script, acting, directing and quality of production is top notch.

Although I believe his story would be even harder to tell than most. His life was so very huge, controversial and panoramic in scope, and depending on the eras depicted, the actor would have to go through many physical changes. Not to mention the fact that pinning down exactly "who" MJ was will be a challenge, and no matter how good or how sensitively they portray him, they will not be able to make everyone happy.

Still, I think the time is ripe for a really good MJ biopic to come along, and with the current boom in films about black icons in particular, an MJ biopic is a must.

On a side note, I would love to see another film made about Jim Morrison. Val Kilmer was wonderful in the '91 Oliver Stone pic, but that film was so one dimensional in its portrayal of Jim. I feel like there needs to be another movie to balance it out.

I always thought a movie about Stevie Ray Vaughan would be good, too. He had such a unique and colorful life, and the whole music scene of Austin, Texas is so full of memorable characters. I don't think there has been any movie that has really attempted to capture the Texas music scene of the 70's.

I want a film about the Shangri-Las. Lots of drama there (two of them are deceased, and the mother of two of the sisters allegedly sold the rights to their songs without their permission.

Many years ago, Bette Midler was considering portraying the woman record label owner who discovered the girl group The Shirelles. I really wish that film had been made.

I second the nominations for Sam Cooke and Connie Francis.

My final thought is the great blues singer/pianist Charles Brown.

I think biopics are finally dying a good slow death. There are way fewer than a few years back, certainly during Oscar-bait season, less nominations and it's not an automatic win as it once was, and the recent examples have been trashed by critics and audience so I think we may be in the clear soon.

Universal has been trying to get a Dusty Springfield biopic off the ground for about 7 years. I think they've had 4 or 5 writers working drafts by now. I'd have loved to see one but obviously it's not going to happen.

oh and speaking of Tammi Terrell, I saw pictures of Taraji P. Henson recently and she looks just like her. She has a great voice so that would be a nice one.

A few that I think would be pretty good, some have had quasi-biopics already

Gram Parsons
George Jones (I don't like him but Jim Carrey would be great for this)
Otis Reading
The Late Great Townes Van Zandt
Richard Manuel or just one on the Band as a whole
Sam Cooke
Marvin Gaye
