Only real problem: Needed more Sarsgaard

Peter Sarsgaard is of the most underrated actors working today, and every time he was on screen it was gold. I know the movie needed time to assemble the seven, but it seems like over an hour went by between the opening scene and Bogue's next appearance.

Outside of that I really have no complaints about the film. Yes it's very much a Hollywood western, and yes it's full of every cliche in the book, but it's still entertaining as hell in that way. It's no 3:10 to Yuma but it's a damn good time at the movies.

WTF are you SMOKING? My brother and I agreed he was freaking terrible and phoning it in!

reply

Every review I've read, both positive and negative, say Sarsgaard is too over-the-top.

Annoying the world since 1960!

The movie was about the seven not Bogue. He didn't need ay more attention then what he got.

As I had said in my first post I agree. They could've used another scene with Rouge somewhere in the middle.

That was also my only concern, but still enjoyed quite much.

Yeah, no 3:10 to Yuma, that film was so underrated. Damn,I watch that film every month because its so good. But, Sarsgaard....I think he did his job in this film. Actually, in every film, I want to punch him in the face (which means he is doing something right). I think here he had a little too much of the "sweatiness" and twitches, a little over the top and we as an audience don't really know where he got all of this standing power aside from the opening scene which isn't hugely convincing, so for me it was kind of like, here is Sarsgaard being an *beep* again for literally no reason. He's a great actor but damn I just want to fight him. And I'm a girl. So I guess that means he is doing his job right....just up the menace and lessen the sweaty twitches.

Sarsgaard was playing a spaghetti western villain and it was glorious.

If he was playing a character that was supposed to be on drugs, then he nailed it.
Seriously, he seemed high in every scene he was in.

I def agree. A 5minute scene with just him would have added a lot more to his character

reply

the movie is not about him. its not a Marvel movie. it follows the same structure as Seven Samurai and the og western in that its about changing of a way of life and about the 7 characters, as said above. it wouldnt have made the movie better, it wouldve made it worse and pointless. Kurosawa knew that, Sturges knew that, Fuqua knew that. PS is over the top because with limited screen time, you have to make a point. He is a hated villain throughout the movie that you want to see defeated bc of how terrible he is in the first 7 minutes.

reply

I agree. I liked him fine, and this movie is just a basic right-to-it action revenge flick, and that is what I wanted. But I would have liked one more good scene with him, just to add a little more complexity. On the other hand, I don't mind that this one is more straight-forward and fast-moving. The characters aren't as complex or developed, but we still get them based on their personalities and interactions.

He was so over the top it was like he was trying to do some weird twitchy copy of a Gary Oldman performance

reply

You nailed it. I thought early on that he was a "poor man's wild west version" of Oldman's character in "The Professional." And he didn't get any better.

Edit: Not to imply that Oldman wasn't great in "Professional." He was.
