The Invitation, The Witch, Coherence, what next?

I'm on a roll right now with Thriller/ horror. Please leave a recommendation of a film that will be as good as these last 3.

reply

Coherence is a random title to throw in with the first two. Invitation and Witch are early 2016 films and coherence is years old already.

The Gift (excellent, sophisticated, expectation-subverting thriller)
Side Effects
Martha Marcy May Marlene (must-see for fans of true, nail-biting suspense and psychological tension)
Kill List (crawls under your skin and builds to a complete freak-out you have to see to believe)
The Disappearance of Alice Creed (crazy twists and turns)
It Follows
The Babadook
The Canal
Nightcrawler
Gone Girl
Oculus (moderately frightening)
Sicario (more of an action thriller, but definitely has shades of darkness and yes, even horror)
Prionsers (one of the darkest, most relentlessly bleak thrillers I've ever seen. as a thriller - it's arguably up there with the best of them, however it is not for everyone.)

*out of all these my strongest suggestions would be The Gift, Kill List, Martha Marcy May Marlene.

All these are upcoming 2016 releases: I haven't seen this promising of a season for horror EVER. There are at least 8 films on this list that will end up classics...if not nearly all of them. Don't mind The Invitation it just looks good on the list - so many films on this list are going to look good on your list of favorites (The Woods, Observance, Don't Breathe, etc.). The Wave is already out OnDemand (Time Warner).

- The Wave (typical disaster plot but made with substance, style, and a constant sense of impending doom and dread - true suspense to be had here)
- The Invitation
- 10 Cloverfield Lane
- Green Room (supposed to be exciting and brutal)
- The Ones Below (positive reviews thus far)
- High-Rise
- Observance (check out the trailer...looks terrifying)
- The Conjuring 2
- The Neon Demon
- The Shallows (trailer looks incredible, this should be a surprisingly strong entry in the shark attack subgenre and Blake Lively is immensely watchable and will provide the kind of grounded performance a film like this needs)
- Don't Breathe
- Lights Out
- The Girl on the Train (the trailer totally sold me... I can't wait to see this. I just couldn't believe how seductive, dark and disturbing that trailer was -- I love how it is set to Kanye's Heartless in a remixed version... so sick! Also love the phenomenally talented Emily Blunt)
- The Woods (amazing reviews so far, some hailing it as a new classic)

Gonna check out Martha Marcy May Marlene. Reading The Girl on the Train atm. Neon Demon got booed at Cannes.

reply

I've heard enough positive feedback about The Neon Demon not to buy into that. Apparently Cannes was out of control this year with film-goers behaving unacceptably and not just for that film. It is likely the boo'ers didn't get what the director was going for.

Martha is a gem. Enjoy.

reply

Neon Demon = personally- I thought it was amazing. Very slow Burn- kinda had me disturbed for a couple days actually. It's deep and does require some analysis. Actually found myself covering my mouth for some reason at a few scenes. So- yea- scared/ disturbed me. Much more horror-esque compared to Martha Marcy...

Martha was definitely a great film. Not horror tho. More drama. It definitely had the slow-burn affect too. Loved John hawkes in it and even
Downloaded /learned how to play "Marcys Song".

Honestly the only solid movies I can really look back on in the past year that I've seen that i consider "true horror" are:

Baskin
Bone Tomahawk
The Witch
The Invitation (the ending changed everything)

I can't remember the other titles but I know I have seen a few. And if you haven't seen the film "Angst"- it's now the scariest film I've ever seen. You've been warned. Not made recently- 1982 I believe. German film. Seems like it's made by Kubrick. That's only if you really want to be disturbed.

Keep the recommendations coming tho:

Thank u thank u

reply

Watch Red, White, and Blue. The Babadook was standard fare at best, and the popularity of It Follows is confounding to me.

reply

My "horror" recommendations from this decade (2010s):

9/10:
The Babadook

8/10:
Housebound
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Resolution
10 Cloverfield Lane
The Witch
It Follows
Let Me In

7/10:
The Conjuring 2
Hush
We Are Still Here
The Invitation
Creep
Honeymoon
The Conjuring
In Fear
The Conspiracy
The Cabin in the Woods
You're Next
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

reply

Yea.. I surprised by The Conspiracy. It did manage to get under my skin.

I guess I have to see You're Next

reply

Some good new ones

Èvolution
Southbound
The One I Love
HADES
Spring
Let Us Prey

reply

Southbound was pretty bad. I mean; it made me wince a few times- but the writing is amateur at best.

reply

It's true - compared to the other films listed "Southbound" is definitely not up to standard. If anything it's entertaining at best, rather than deep.
But I must admit, that I kind of liked it - though as with most anthology films, the segments are kind of hit and miss.

reply

Any chance you saw Red White and Blue? It's next on the list ...

reply

"Red White and Blue" has been on my list for a while - should finally check it out.

reply

Just watched RWB... Solid film - but I wouldn't call it a horror film. There's only 2 or 3 gruesome scenes. Also watched Martha Marcy Marlene and that was awesome - but not horror. Those two will disturb you- but i don't know if I'd recommend them persay. I feel there are better horror films.

reply

I saw "Southbound" recently and quite liked it. It was flawed, but a good attempt.

Going to start watching all of these recommendations in this thread (already seen Babadook, It Follows, The Witch, The Gift, and The Perfect Host - enjoyed all of them).

If you're talkin' good indie horror over the past few years, check out: The Den, Starry Eyes, Pontypol, The Canal, Kristy and Hush (the newer, American one with that title involving a deaf woman). The Last Shift is pretty silly, but still entertaining.

After having looked at some of the other films people listed, I too recommend Red, White & Blue and anything by Adam Winegard (The Guest, You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die). Might add The Sacrament and Alone With Her. Certainly see Session 9 if you haven't, but that's going back about 15 years and I was trying to come up with more recent indie thriller/horror films.
