This is a great movie but isn't Winter Soldier still the best sequel?

Marvel has already delivered some great sequels (Iron Man 2 being the ugly step-child) but as good as Age of Ultron turned out isn't Winter Soldier still the better all around movie?

Winter Soldier had a lot to juggle but not as much or as many characters as Avengers. To me, this is what lands Age of Ultron below Winter Soldier. It looks like Whedon filmed more connective tissue but some of it hit the cutting room floor. We know what was cut from Winter Soldier and none of it effected character or story. Will we say that once we see Age of Ultron's cut scenes?

As it stands, Winter Solder felt more intense and more personal. Avengers is entertaining as can be but feels more broad.

The Winter Soldier for me is hands down the best MCU film and my favorite comic book film. It's raised the bar very highly.

I'm probably one of the few people who liked Captain America: The First Avenger the best out of all of the Phase I movies. So yeah, so far I think Cap is the strongest film series in the MCU. Though that could change depending on how CA: Civil War and GotG 2 turns out.

SPOILERS:
Rosebud is a sled, Snape kills Dumbledore, Ned Stark dies.

It's all in how you look at it and what you are feeling on what particular day.

Phase 1 had some phenomenal movies. I've always touted Thor as the best of phase 1. Its a Shakespearean tragedy on Asgard with great characters. First Avenger and Iron Man are right there with it. I think I rated those three films a 9/10. Hugo Weaving does an excellent job as the Red Skull (and the German accent) and Obadiah/Iron Monger in Iron Man is a son of a B. They had some really good villains in phase 1.

...and I guess phase 2 had some great movies two since I rated WS 10/10 and Guardians 10/10.

Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'...
...That's god damn right.

Thor was my favorite of Phase One. I thought the Marvel-Meets-Shakespeare approach worked, I enjoyed the fish out of water elements on Earth, and it was refreshing to not have an origin story but just jump right into Asgard. Anthony Hopkins made a great Odin, and the Thor/Loki relationship was the most layered and interesting of all the hero/villain pairings of the MCU so far. Loki was sympathetic and interesting as both brother and rival for the throne (and their father's affections and pride). He became rather one dimensional in Whedon's hands in Avengers, but his motivations and choices made him a fascinating character in the first Thor. I look forward to seeing him back in Ragnarok.

Nutsacks say stuff like that gut said.

You know for you two to make that Shakespearean comparison then you need to look no where else then the director himself. Kenneth Brannagh is a well known stage actor in the UK and he still plays some of the bard's works on stage every now and then. He would have been my choice to direct Man of Steel.

Am I the only one who didn't really think much of GOTG?
I REALLY wanted to like it, and I eagerly awaited it, and I was super disappointed.
I'm guessing it's because I didn't know anything about the characters, as I never read the comic books, so I really didn't enjoy GOTG as much as I hoped to.

you're not alone. i was looking forward to it, especially with chris pratt, but god, did i end up hating it. i don't have anything nice to say about that movie.

(Iron Man 2 being the ugly step-child)

The importance of Iron Man 2 to the overall MCU cannot be understated.

And it has Sam Rockwell in it.

Any list that has Iron man 2 near the bottom is suspect.

Good point, it set up Avengers and gave us Black Widow perfectly.

Has everyone checked out Sam Rockwell as Hammer in the Marvel one-shot All Hail The King? He's the best after credits scene EVER!

personally felt hammer this character is kinda waste and too weak in film version while compare to comics version as remember ...

Winter Soldier is my favorite

Winter Soldier is indeed the best sequel of the Marvel Movie Universe, and I'd put it number 2 in the overall rankings, with Iron Man being one.

When we're thinking about our own brain, would that be a mental paradox??

reply

Yes. Cap 2 is the best MCU sequel in my mind.
Evolution of characters and relationships, introduction of new characters that didn't feel super forced, phenomenal fight scenes and stunt choreography (SO much improved from the first), good musical score, nice twist on the hydra reveal...and a throwback and true "sequel in time" to the first one with the return of certain characters and elements.
None of the other sequels had quite *this* many things going for them, while none of it felt jammed together, none of it felt "too much" nor did the film feel too long or short.
Very, VERY solid movie.
I wasn't much a fan of the first one, so I went in with relatively low expectations, which made for me the experience that much better.

My favorite part of Capt. 2 was his [improved] hand to hand badassery. I think back to Avengers I, where he tangled with Loki in Germany. He looked a bit overmatched and sluggish against Loki. I get it that Loki gets powers from being a demi-god, but he was punking Capt. before Iron Man showed up and blasted him.

If Loki would've tangled with Winter Soldier Capt., I'm inclined to think Capt. would've taken him. He looked a like a machine.

Rank it and run seems to be the preferred concept here.

Of the sequels, Age of Ultron > Captain America: The Winter Soldier > Iron Man 3 > Iron Man 2 > Thor: The Dark World

"Of the sequels, Age of Ultron > Captain America: The Winter Soldier > Iron Man 3 > Iron Man 2 > Thor: The Dark World"

I liked Thor: The Dark World and place it ahead of Iron Man 2. To me, Iron Man 2 is Marvel's only misfire.

In my opinion The Winter Solider is the best MCU film to date. It is near perfect.

You're never going to get any truth from us(the media). We'll tell you anything you want to hear.

reply

Winter Soldier is, IMO, not only the best sequel, it's the best MCU film, hands down.

As for sequels, I find Marvel to be hit and miss: IM2 was bad but Dark World wasn't much better. AoU is good and Winter Soldier is great. So four sequels and they have been all over the rating (from bad to mediocre to good to great).

Winter Soldier makes AOU better because it gives us that Cap but also everyone else. We care more for all of them. It's a Cap film itself but so much more.

Now I can add Captainamerica50 to your list of sock accounts...

lol You once again couldn't hide one of your biggest "tells"

You do it all the time with all your other sock accounts.

You try to be clever by saying "Well This Marvel movie is great But Not as Great as this Marvel Movie"

also coincidentally This sock account was made exactly 10 years ago...lol just like magicmarky,shacklefort,xdome,avengers1234 and twogunbud.

Uber you are incapable of disguising your trolling, I'm not kidding the second I read the title of this thread I knew it was you, I didn't even need to look to see that this Sock account was made 10 years ago at the exact same time as all your other Sock accounts.

yep Captainamerica50 will be added to the list thank you Uber

Its also worth noting I was right, You now are using new/different sock accounts because I continue to post your most used sock accounts...
