So yeah, we learn later they are not the only unfaithful people, but that was a complete turnoff. And while I wouldn't want anything to happen to an unborn baby and she was in an abusive relationship, I was really hoping she would die. I really don't think they (or any cheating couple) deserve a happy ending.
Yeah, this is where the movie felt odd to me. I have never seen a movie where I had so little invested in the "good guys" story. Most of the movie doesn't follow them, and we don't get to know them at all, and yet we are supposed to be rooting for them just because everyone else is such a dick. I didn't really want them to get away or get their happy ending. I think that was the flaw of this movie, it didn't really have a clear protagonist. Simon Pegg feels like the protagonist, but at the same time the movie doesn't want to make him our "hero" because he is such a cold blooded killer. In any other film the viewer is supposed to be cheering that two star crossed lovers get away with the money to start a family, but in this film I couldn't have cared less about what happened to them. It never gave us a reason to like them other than the fact that the people in their lives sucked so much. Thank god for Pegg's comic relief as the closing scene, because that was one hollow ending to an otherwise surprisingly entertaining little movie.
I felt that there could have been more after the ending, the couple living happily ever after really didn't fit the movie, in my opinion. In order to ruin the "love always wins" finale, Simon Pegg could have tracked them down after he recovered and killed them after having some kind of closure or dialogue, I think THAT could have been a great ending. OR, Pegg could have waited until the woman delivered the baby, killed the couple, and raised the baby to be a professional killer like himself. AND THEN when the baby turned 18, he could kill Simon Pegg and steal all of his money and say it's just business.
Damn---that's a real Kill Bill-type ending there, lol. That would have made an even better flick, though. The thing is, the cheating couple just wanted to get the hell out of their situation---they were the only ones in the entire film that weren't trying to kill anyone else, especially for money.
Agreed. It's typical in movies nowadays where the cheaters are supposed to be the good guys, so they just throw in a scene or two where the cheaters have a sob story, like a drunken or abusive husband. Sometimes the husband is a real jerk, like in this movie, or sometimes we don't know about the husband, like 4 Weddings and a Funeral (and a cheating wife).
Eh. I thought the ending was just fine. For me, it's okay for the "good guys" to have flaws. We all do. The fact that they were not malicious, murderous, money grubbing reprobates was good enough for me :)
