1962-1992: 16 films, 1992-2022: 9 films, 2022-2052: ??

As we approach the 60th anniversary of the series, look at how dead it is. 9 films in 30 years. I doubt there will another one by 2022, but perhaps they will get up to 10 films. It seemed like just yesterday that they were making such a big deal about the 50th anniversary, and yet here we are approaching 60 years with only two films in the last decade.

A 43% drop in production output every 30 years means that the period of 2022-2052 will have only about 4 films. RIP James Bond and Eon Productions.

I would say quality over the quantity, but the movies from 1995-2020 for the most part aren't good (Goldeneye & Casino Royale are exceptions) so I don't know what to say. I guess we should be happy that they take forever to make, it would be awful to see Daniel Craig every other year and have him end up staring as James Bond 7 times.

Does it take longer to make movies now and / or actors more demanding? In the beginning we were getting a Connery film every year and as we transitioned from Lazenby to Connery to Moore to Dalton it was pretty much every other year like clockwork. Brosnan was every other year until DAD, which was three years. QOS was two years after CR, and that was clearly rushed. 4 years after that Skyfall, 3 more to Spectre, and 5!!! more until NTTD.

I'd like to go back to every other year, but I think it should be no more than 3 years. 4 or 5 years is ridiculous.

One of the dumb reasons there is such a delay is because they are waiting for unimportant supporting actors like Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris to become available. The producers didn't wait around back in the 60's. Desmond Llewelyn only got the role of Q because the original actor from Dr. No wasn't available for From Russia With Love, so they moved ahead without him. Why would they wait months or years for actors to become available when they're only in the movies for no more than five minutes? It's completely idiotic, and these particular actors don't deserve to be waited on for so long. What have they contributed to this series that is so special that they deserve the privilege of taking years to commit to the next production? Nothing. This is what an obsession with continuity gets us.

But it also goes to show how irrelevant the series is now. The biggest film series in history now has to wait around for some B-list actors to want to make another film. Bond is not their first priority, and probably not even their fifth priority at any given time. Sad.

It also hasn't been clarified whether the production team solved the issue of Craig's injury interfering with Malek's schedule because his scenes were scheduled to be filmed while Craig was out of action. I would expect some pretty awkward scenes and dialogue between these two because the editors are probably trying to salvage and re-cut whatever they can in the editing room to compensate for this issue. I bet they were never able to properly re-schedule these crucial scenes.

Waiting on Craig was part of the issue - will he wont' he return as Bond. I hope they just move on from him right away and don't keep waiting on him to decide. The search for a new Bond could take a while, unless they already have that person picked out...

It'll be like the Alien franchise has been, sporadic releases, one or two films a decade, each one crapper than before.

What a total mismanagement of a once great franchise, overrated Craig should have never been given so much power.

I think the truth is finally starting to be realized by most fans. I don't see very many fans praising Craig these days. The lustre of Casino Royale has long since worn off and it has retroactively become worse because of the subsequent creative decisions that have been made. Quantum was never well received. The last two films directed by Mendes were an absolute pile of dogshit regardless of box office numbers and what mainstream American critics think. How is anyone excited for NTTD? I'm excited for it to just be over and done with so that we can hopefully reboot with the next one.

Could this be the end of Bond???

reply

No.

It's finally starting to feel inevitable at this point. I really don't think it can survive much longer at the rate it's going.

2, maybe 3 more films (including THIS one), then it’s over until someone decides to reboot the Thunderball story again in the 2040s or 50s.

reply

If the pattern continues we will have 4 films

Bond always re-invents itself. The last few Bond films have made a good chunk of coin. NTTD will probably be a step in quality.
