How did Joe get so ugly in just a few years?

The casting of this movie was awful. Joe is really beautiful and delicious when young, and then, when her baby is born, after just 2 or 3 she becames ugly as hell. What on earth happened to this poor woman??? Jerome remains, on its turn, with the same face. Then, later in the movie, he gets old and joe has the same ugly face.....I think LVT really screwed up the casting in this movie, he should have either make up Gainsbourg younger or Stacy Matin older, or choose actresses with more resemblance.

Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of the hottest women on the planet, she's awesome.

I think the actress is very believable because she looks like what real people look like, not a stunning model like her mother, which is not who the average person looks like. She could a use a cheeseburger or two. But I never thought she was ugly. But your average looking person.
I think LVT is trying to show us how any addiction takes a toll on you. Her self destructive lifestyle. She looks like she had a hard life. Actually I thought he was pretty soft on the subject. Where are all of her STD's? Having sex with strangers is a sure way of coming up with one, more then a few times.

Her nips and saggy tush, were the ugliest things on her. My gosh, her nips were HUGE.

Look at Natalie Portman and how much older she's gotten just in the past couple years after her childbirth:

Yup, she's pretty ugly. Whoever casted her must have been playing a joke to be anti-erotic in an erotic film. This vol 2 sucked because 90% of the film, her ugly mug is on.

I thought the same thing. I think Charlotte is cute, but compared to her other portrayals, something when wrong in her life... her child actor had these bright green eyes, her teen was very pretty and perky, suddenly when she's grown she looks like she massively detoriated... I mean no offense to Charlotte, she's cute in her own way... but the timeline seemed really screwed up, she looked like that even when Shia was still in his role. Tough to explain lol

The early scenes aren't flashbacks, they're stories Joe is telling (inventing?) to Seligman. Throughout the film, all of Joe's stories are inspired by items in Seligman's room, which the audience can interpret as proof that Joe is creating these stories to make a point.

As another poster suggested earlier, the casting has a lot to do with Joe's perception of events, or the perception that she's trying to present to Seligman.
