I love it how they took the spiral from the artistic Game of Thrones White Walkers and used it in Night Country, which is featured in every episode of Season 4 of True Detective.
Unfortunately no explanation for what the spiral actually is ever given, in either series.
The SPIRAL image was also used 10 YEARS ago back in Season One of True Detective (long before GoT was produced).
And in Season 4 of TD a HUNTER also explained how the SPIRAL image was used as a WARNING for others, so that they'd know they were near the DANGEROUS ICE CAVES that would SWALLOW them up (due to the way the ICE was as thin as GLASS and breaks easily ... which we also saw happening when Danvers & Navarro were on top of them and then got SWALLOWED UP ... when they fell down inside of them ... where they found their way to the Underground Science Lab where Annie K was killed).
In other words, in the NIGHT COUNTRY the SPIRAL was pretty much the same thing as having a STOP SIGN or another HAZZARDOUS ROAD SIGN posted on one of our highways.
Game of Thrones first season was in 2011. True Detective 2014.
