the CGI isnt all that

Sorry but I never at any point believed Godzilla was ever real. The CGI is better than the American Godzilla movies admittedly but it still looked fake and even bad at times. Like that opening scene? The CGI is AWFUL. Why do we hate using practical effects so much? I can watch Godzilla 2000, a movie that's admittedly worse, but be in awe because Godzilla looks, moves, and reacts like it would in real life.

reply

The entire movie, including visual effects, cost $12 million. The latest American "Godzilla x Kong" cost around $140 million. So more than 10 x the cost. I personally was very impressed with what Toho was able to do with that small fraction of a budget.

reply

The effects looks very good for the costs. But in Japan Salary for SFX specialists is much lower as in US and it is much more likely that they do culturewise overtime. Doesn't change much, but it is one explaination point.

reply

The recent American Godzilla films look superb. It's as if Godzilla and the other monsters actually exist. The effects in this one are somewhat clunky, but I think that's half on purpose, as an homage to the old guy-in-a-rubber-suit films, and half budgetary. That said, there's no way to make anything look even close to realistic using practical effects.

reply

The American Godzilla movies look awful. It has that typical weightless feel to the CGI akin to video games. It looks plenty detailed but never tangible not even for a second. Godzilla in this movie looked significantly more tangible.

reply

Watch the first Godzilla film, from 2014, and find a moment where the beasts don't look real. They move like they have weight to them, and look as real as any kaiju ever have. Their eyes look real, their breathing looks real, and when they fight there is a slowness to the battle befitting their great size. The Godzilla in this film looks like a guy in a foam rubber suit, spruced up with some '90s era CGI.

reply

Lol Godzilla 2014 is the worst out of the lot.

Look at this blurry mess. It looks like they used low res video game textures at times, absolutely awful. Not even the cover of nightfall made the CGI look real. Utterly unimpressive. There's a reason why it didn't even get a nomination for Best Visual Effects, yet Godzilla Minus One actually won the award. You may need to invest in a new pair of prescription glasses if you think Godzilla 14 had exceptional visual effects.

reply

Godzilla 2014 is still the best of The Monsterverse and better than 1998 Abomination

reply

If you honestly believe the CGI in Minus One is better than the 2014 Godzilla film then I don't know what to tell you. The 2014 film looked like actual footage of giant beast, Minus One looks like a guy in a suit with some CGI enhancement.

reply

If you think that footage looked real then I don't know what to tell you. It looks so generic and unimpressive. The McDonald's of CGI.

The fact that you think Minus One looks like a guy in a suit is a testament to the fact that Godzilla actually looks tangible and real in this movie. You just shot your own argument in the foot. Godzilla 14 looks like a video game cutscene.

reply

If they were to remake JAWS for modern day, it would be 100% CGI all the way and look terrible

reply

LOL!

reply

First: you saying that the CGI in here is better than the American Godzilla movies is laughable. No, it's not better at all. The American movies have way better CGI.

Second: you saying the CGI in here being poor is false as well.

reply

The consensus is that this movie has better CGI. Godzilla feels far more tangible in this movie than the American version.

reply

That's not the consensus at all.

The consensus is obvious: the CGI from the American Godzilla is vastly superior to the Japanese version.

reply

You're living in your own reality bud. Not a single American Godzilla movie has even been nominated for Best Special Effects. Godzilla Minus One was not only nominated, but it won. At an American award show no less.

reply

YOU are living in your own reality, mate.

Oscars? Are you joking? Nobody takes Oscars seriously, especially when it demands inclusion and diversity and Minus One is Japanese.

The American Godzilla is factually superior in CGI. Fact.

reply

Nobody cares what you take seriously bud. You are nobody. You calling something a fact doesn't make it so. You debate like a 6 year old. I'll repeat - not a single American Godzilla movie has been nominated for Best Special Effects, before or after diversity was a consideration. The American Godzilla's look like typical generic trash. Lots of money thrown at the screen with no nuance. It's the McDonald's of CGI.

Nobody cares about YOU and your dumb ramblings and childish opinions. YOU debate like a 3-year old moronic troll.

You’ve been acting the same way since 2007. That’s commitment. You’re, what, in your 40’s now? Are you Boogie2988? That’s who I imagine.

reply

You must be a legendary troll.

Are you AyeLewis or He Cant?

reply

That’s for me to know and you to find out ;)

But honestly I was not on the trolling end in 2007. The Jurassic Park 3 boards were a blast. Thanks for the good times Mr Salsamix

reply

I always know everything, comrade! That's right!

That was hilarious! I loved the Jurassic Park boards and I continue that same trend here on Moviechat and others.

What was your name on IMDB?! ;)

reply

The consensus? It's you saying it and nearly everyone else saying otherwise.

reply

You must be replying to that retard Liquid Ocelot, right?

reply

Yes, if you trace back you'll see it was his post I replied to. He seems to think consensus means "his own opinion."

reply

Yeah! I always laugh out loud how he uses the word "consensus".

Maybe it's consensus between and his own little dog... LOL!

reply

It wasn't practical but most of CGI; even the water, ships, buildings, landscapes & the creature of-course. And the CGI was damn good. But the thing it made so awe-inspiring is the perfect use of color pallet & tint which made everything blended very well and looked realistic. It's an achievement that such a small team with minimum budget, achieved such a detailed CGI.

Cinematography also added much value and justice to the CGI. The scene of Koichi shooting directly on Godzilla's mouth is an amazing shot! The post-world war II set-up also complimented the CGI as the weapons/mines/ships added that raw & rustic look elevating the realism. Godzilla's robotic way of walk was a tribute to the original by choice, and they didn't opt for the typical Hollywood over-fluidic style by giving a slight touch of stop-animation. Absolutely worth the Oscar!

Compared to The Flash & Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantaimia it some of the best still better than actors in suits.
