Is it better than Shin Godzilla (2016) ?
Just curious
I just couldn't get into Shin Godzilla.. It was a little too far out for my taste, especially the evolution and design as the movie went on.. It just wasn't for me
shareJust saw it. Indeed, there were some truly good visual effects, nice monster moments & post world-war period setup. But overall, the movie had lot of boring & unnecessary parts. The ending was quite under-whelming.
So, for me. Shin Godzilla ranks higher and is the clear winner. The movie was focused on Godzilla and Godzilla only. There were many great action scenes, showcased various efforts/strategies to kill Godzilla concluding to a satisfactory & grand ending.
Finally got to watch -1.0, and I enjoyed it, but it was just a first viewing for me. I've seen Shin Godzilla at least 20 times, and it's definitely one of my very favorites.
I still prefer Shin Godzilla as of this moment.
One thing about Minus 1 that stuck out to me that I truly was annoyed by, was how Godzillas' spikes kept popping out while he charged his heat beam. I actually thought that was unnecessary and cheesy, especially showing it repeatedly like that.
Shin Godzilla has a lot more visionary direction behind it but it's also extremely uneven. Some of the city destruction feels completely realistic and epic. I love the J-Dams and B-2 bomber attacks which seem like the nearly kill Godzilla. It's neat to see Godzilla nearly defeated by conventional attacks. He was a bit over-powered though with lasers that could shoot across the city and into space, destroying everything immediately. It was epic, but also so much that it didn't really make him believably vulnerable afterward.
Also Godzilla didn't have a lot of personality in that movie - he seemed like some kind of chemical reaction rather than an actual character. I did actually kind of like that in a way, sort of like how he was uncharacteristically demonic in the one movie (GMK?) with the big glowing white eyes. He was actually scary every now and then.
Minus 1 is a much more evenly crafted movie and a lot more accessible for someone seeking a narrative movie experience. I did like the WW2 setting but also feel like there was a lot more they could have done with it, like show the USA and soviet union attempting to kill Godzilla in their own ways before leaving it to the Japanese, but the movie was a little hampered in scope by a relatively low budget. It's a miracle what they were able to do with the budget they had, but it's still a notch below SHIN in terms of scope.
I just wish SHIN had more consistent effects and not had that dumb subplot of that attractive Japanese woman pretending to be a native-born American high-up politician when her accent was thick as molasses.
I like this a lot more than Shin Godzilla.
