I can't figure out why the low ratings

This movie was actually pretty good for one of these type (sexy) movies. I thought it was sexually appealing and the chemistry between the actors was good. Of course if you have a problem watching S and M then you may not want to see this. All in all its a sexually appealing movie that's worth watching and Dakota Johnson looks great with no clothes on

reply

Others (myself as well) disagree with everything you said hence the low ratings!

reply

I never trust the IMDb ratings...anyone can go on the site and vote..even if they have not seen the movie..it is interesting to check on the gender and ages of the voters...one I particularly loved was both of the Magic Mike movies...the male gender tended to vote way down, and the board comments very similar to 50 Shades....no surprise..I go for the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes...I don't always agree, but they seem to have a balance array of critics.

Use your words. What did you not like about it? Does the kink content offend you? Was it something else? I have not seen the movie but I am curious about reactions.

Use your words. What did you not like about it?

Boring
Tame
Unsexy
Dumb
Boring
Lifeless
Dull
Did i say boring?

Is that enough words for ya?

reply

I have it two stars because in my opinion it is very bad. Hence my low rating

reply

True...you have to register to join IMBd and vote...but that doesn't change what I said..and if you read the posts on said movies, there are many who say "well, I haven't seen the movie but I read about it...or a friend told me...and on and on..

reply

I really appreciate your thorough, detailed criticism of the movie.

(I also like this movie, love story wise, but for 2015 I much prefer Far from the Madding Crowd)
People are different - watching movies wise.
For movies that I consider bad from a first few minutes, I tend to stop watching after a first few minutes and I usually don't rate them (might do, if they are so bad from those first few minutes). And I definitely don't go to their message boards often.
For movies of some genres I don't like, I don't watch them either, might skim for a few minutes to see what they are, then lose interest) and I don't rate them. For examples, the series Hunger Games of Jennifer Lawrence, Divergent, The Hobbit, Ray Donovan, Games of Throne. Also definitely don't go to their message boards often.

reply

Movie80, after reading your first paragraph, I stopped reading the rest because it was not even worth it....kind of like this lame movie.

reply

I too believe people are rating without watching, I think this happens with a lot of titles, they rate films according to what IMBD ratings say only. This is not my type of movie by far, I enjoy Sci-Fi and Thrillers, but I was very curious about this movie because of so many, many people talking about it. I though it was very good, Jamie Dornan did a excellent job as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson was fabulous as Anastasia Steele. I would also agree that most (not all) of the negative ratings are from men, they do believe all films should be solo directed towards them.

reply

Have you ever read the Magic Mike posts?...dang, that was so funny...all these males who couldn't figure out why a woman would want to see half nude good looking men..and the ones on here who say.."just watch porn instead"...yeah, right.

reply

No, not all films. Some romances should be about men that are not rich. When the story is like that, however, women tend to think they are not romantic.

reply

No chemistry for me. It was so boring.. boring plot, boring faces, even the sex was boring. I was so bored, i couldn't even finish it. Everything was a cliché. I guess it was suposed to look like they were both really introspective and 'deep-souled' but actually turned out looking like she's dumb and easy and he's a superficial psycho. God, i need something to drag me out of the bad mood i got into after watching half of this bull..

Stacy, you made my day!

reply

Ah, and that's why I love you. Not because I pay you to give me the random compliment here and there, but because you're adorable 

Now, how exactly do I go about getting my hands on one of those cuddly creatures?

~Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable~

reply

They have some at the San Diego Zoo and in Washington D.C., but alas, you can't get up close and personal with one. Oh well, there's always China.

reply

I've seen them (1) at the San Diego zoo. But the line moves quickly, and sadly, no time for lingering---or licking the windows, or just in general waving at an animal who could care less if you're there to begin with. They look so cuddly until they're not.

~Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable~

reply

Yeah, I tried licking the window in San Diego too. Didn't work and sure pissed off the people behind me.

A Fifty question - what do you think of the choice for Jack Hyde? I've liked the actor since Legends of the Fall and fear he might overshadow Jamie Dornan. He's a much more seasoned performer. He played a real bastard in The Knick and more than held his own opposite Clive Owen.

reply

To be honest, I've never even heard his voice. I have no idea who he is. But I have read on these boards that he's a terrific actor, so I can see why people are thinking that.

I have this theory. Well, it's not mine per se...it's actually old as hell. To be great you need to surround yourself with greatness. This could be a good thing for Jamie. He needs to be pushed and tested so that he can grow beyond his comfort zone. It's the Keeping up with the Joneses effect. You are the company you keep. The best thing for him would be to spar against great actors, and sooner or later, he will keep up with them and possibly even surpass them.

I think that's why so many people when they mention The Fall, they always talk about that one particular scene when he was being interrogated by Gillian Anderson. I think what people were actually witnessing was her greatness rubbing off on him. She tested and pushed his limits to the point of turning out a better version of who he was when that series first started. Hopefully, this Eric (I want to say Roberts..but you know, Eric da-da-da...) will end up doing the same thing for him.

Emulation is the key to stand where they are standing.

People should never feel inferior to someone else because that other person is perceived to be better than themselves. If they're smart, they will figure out a way to absorb a little bit of what their counterpart has going for him. You take from this person and that person, and in the end, who you are is the direct culmination from other people's experiences and life lessons.

Also, it doesn't hurt to have the worst review he's ever read about himself, taped up in his trailer. If he doesn't want that to happen again, he needs to stay focused.

Hi, my love,

I think Jamie was the victim of crappy direction and writing and got the brunt of the blame. No one could have made that script come alive with some of that dialogue and the glacial pace of the film really hurt his character. I think Jamie has talent in addition to being quite attractive, but no one could have survived the lackluster direction. Instead of bringing out his boyish aspects, they wanted an ice-cold alpha male and a wham, bam, thank you ma'am lover. That's what they got. No wonder Charlie Hunnam though Christian read like a frat boy.

I'm overjoyed about the change in director. I thought Sam Taylor-Johnson did a lousy job. I counted the beats between responses and you could have driven a MAC truck between some of the pauses. Taylor-Johnson shot some of the most unflattering footage of both actors, framed scenes so the actors were miles apart and never pushed the chemistry, something directorial rather than left to the actors. I've seen some of Niall Leonard's television work (he wrote for Robson Green and Clive Owen). If anyone can get that smelly prose to work, it's Leonard.

I also agree that working with a better actors will help him up his game. I probably won't see the next one in a theater, but I'll look forward to watching a bootleg.

reply

Nialls is boss lady's husband, right? Again, I couldn't pick him out of a line up if my life depended on it. I'll have to go with the one who appears to be withered down the most by a gruesome marriage and lacking any balls for $500, Alex. I do know that he did read her books the first time around and gave it his kiss of approval. So his credibility, with me, is as winded and tapped out as far and wide as Jared Fogle's anus right now.

Also, she seems like a woman who needs complete and total control, so she has got to be all over that script. I don't know, maybe she let him dot the i's, cross the t's, and put periods at the end of the sentences. Clearly her 'I wake, with a start' is her doing. Five words in one sentence, and incredulously enough, there's still a mistake. So, my dear, you have more faith than I do in this next script.

Listen to me. I sound like such a Debbie Downer. I'm a positive person, dammit.

Since I'm already in this train of negative thinking, I might as well continue. STJ seems like a genuinely nice woman. I won't judge her work because I'm not familiar with it---FSOG being excluded. But she did Dakota no favors in the elevator, post glider, and a billion other scenes. Say it with me...No...More...Close ups. She did to Dakota what the wardrobe department did to Jamie. I mean, seriously. How can you take a beautiful man, such as Jamie, and make him less attractive when money is no object?

The suit pants were often times too short, showing ankles when he walked. The suits also fitted too snugly in certain places, for instance in his shoulder blades and thighs. No wonder he had to constantly unbutton his jacket when sitting, otherwise it would've ripped apart at the seams. And I can't be sure, but in that strange 'walk in the woods' scene, his outfit looked like something Danny Tanner would've worn in 1991.

Oh, and don't get me started on the black jeans and possibly tucked in shirt....am I remembering that correctly? His shirt was tucked in??? You know what, it's okay. I don't really want to know. I'm not a fashionista by any stretch of the imagination, but give me $5 and I will dress that man for Darker. I'm half afraid the tux they're going to come up with is a ruffled, cornflower blue polyester little number for the big masquerade bash. I'm not even kidding--these guys are such joksters. If they didn't tank him enough in the script department, they sure as hell cut him down in the wardrobe...oh, and the hair. Okay, you're right. I better stop.

So the question remains---what the hell was going on in that set? Judging by this movie, I think it's safe to assume who had the substance abuse problems left unchecked and who did not.

Warning: I wrote this on my phone at the mercy of auto correct. So, I will apologize now if Apple took my words and turned them into smarmy insults and incoherent ramblings. It wasn't me--it was Apple.

Hi my love, in defense of Leonard, he said all he did with the original FSOG manuscript was remove the ellipses. I think he realized his wife wouldn't take criticism well. Shooting just started and she's there on set. Hopefully, she'll have more respect for a seasoned director.

I felt Sam Taylor-Johnson did everything to photograph her leads in the most unflattering way and I agree, no close-ups for Dakota. Her hair looked different in every scene, sometimes wavy, sometimes board straight. I personally thought the scene after the whipping was one of the most unflattering for Dakota, but of course, there were many. I hated the gratuituous nudity on Dakota's part and felt it exposed the worst parts of her looks. The story is supposed to be a romantic fantasy and the actors should look as attractive as possible in every scene.

I don't know what happened on the set but so much wasn't caught in post.

reply

Well the jury is out on Leonard, and I'll just have to hold my opinion until further notice.

But in all honesty, I could care less with the particulars of this movie. I was and have been here because of Jamie. If he wasn't in it, I wouldn't even be on these boards. I would've probably never have seen it. I guess I'm more worried about the impact of this film on his life and the lack of responsibility on those in charge. I hope the security is amped up...and I most definitely hope he's more cautious than he was on The Fall set. These aren't just twenty something year old stalkers. I just read about the anti groups getting themselves worked up again.

Despite the poor reviews, I think Fifty Shades has been a winner for his career and he will continue to grow in stature because of it. Critics only have so much sway within the movie world. A friend who heads a journalists' group met Dana Brunetti at a function for producer, Arnon Milchan. She said Brunetti was over the moon about the box office and really liked his two leads. That is all that matters.

I personally think Jamie Dornan a charming guy and hope the new director allows that charm on screen. I remember him from Marie Antoinette, the first time I saw him. He seems to work well with everyone involved and the movies should be a win-win for him just as they have been for Dakota.

Let the pro and anti groups speculate all they want, the film has a huge fan base and will be a hit. By the way, from what I've gathered from my one friend in Vancouver, security is strict so Jamie should be fine.

The reason for the low ratings is its a fraction of the movie it could be with the right actors playing the roles ...

Its a pretty terrible and flawed system that created a movie that allowed now upwards of 4+ actors all to be allowed to call themselves Christian Grey

1)Matthew Bomer : To be released in the Los Angeles area and Calabasas February 2013 but was recast and shot 1 month or less before release date

2)Charlie Hunnam : Rumored

3)T.J Dalrymple : I just saw his name on a poster in pinterest so its a new one to me.

4)Jaime Dornan : The final decsion after months of looking for just the right guy. The first movie 50 shades of Grey released Valentine Weekend in 2015. The 2nd movie 50 shades darker is scheduled for release in 2017.

Then there's the character that played Elliot Grey in the version I saw with Jaime Dornan and who was a billion times hotter than Jaime and who I believe may have actually been the original Luke Grimes ... in the scene where Anna and Christian walk in and find her roommate with Elliot on the couch then they both go to leave and Elliot says "laters baby"to the roommate (hot) and Christian follows saying the same thing to Anna (weird and forced) which is why I never understood why the line was so famous with the movie... actually to me it triggered a longing for the guy who always told me to be good before leaving and I always promised him I would try.

There was a plot??

Hi AdventureToo,

I'd call the movie limp due to poor direction and a lousy script.

As far as the ratings, a large percentage were posted before the film opened but those determined to put it down. Like you I liked some of the music, thought Dakota was cute in some of the scenes, however, I disagree on it capturing Seattle. I know it was shot a shuttle-ride away in Vancouver, but in my opinion it didn't capture Seattle's marvelous ambiance.

Vancouver is the new hot spot for shooting movies...lots and lots of movies and TV shows are made there...they have great tax advantages, and welcome the movie makers...most all of the Twilight movies were made there...

reply

As another poster pointed out, Vancouver has been a favorite of filmmakers and television shows for decades. Besides the tax credits and the overabundance of crews and technicians, it's cheaper than shooting in the States. I do wish the had added a bit more of the second unit work filmed in Seattle.

I think the dancing scene was E.L. James's attempt at levity, but it just seemed strange to me. It's beyond cheesy, extremely goofy with two actors who simply can't dance. Slow dancing to an R & B song would have been a million times better.

reply

[deleted]

Hi AdventureToo,

People have written about the lack of chemistry since the movie came out. This was a perfect example of a blown opportunity - two actors who couldn't dance prancing around to a Frank Sinatra tune. What 20-somethings dance to Frank Sinatra? It became another scene where the actors don't communicate visually and looked awkward. If he had taken her in his arms, and they'd slow danced to something people actually dance to, it could have been a erotically charged moment - or maybe not. Sam Taylor-Johnson was the wrong director for this project.

reply

I was bored watching it. There was a lot "off" about the movie and it wasn't the sexual nature of the story. The chemistry between the leads wasn't very natural, it felt forced. I love Jamie Dornan but he felt mis-cast in this particular movie. Now, I know that he didn't have a lot of time to prepare for this role but the direction that he received for the character (either because of his own thought process or that of the director) was wrong. The script was pretty lousy, partly because some lines don't sound right when said out loud.

That being said, it's definitely not one of the worst movies that I have seen over the years (Open Water was a movie that bored me even more than this one, for example). I just feel that this was a missed opportunity to make this story stronger than it is. As we all know, just because a movie makes millions does not make it a great movie but I also know that some people rated this movie low even before seeing it.
