SPOILERS (For anyone who hasn't seen episode 5)

So what's Cottan's motive for shooting dead Lindsay Denton? He looked pretty desperate to stop her sending that ss of the list. My guess is that only a man who's name is on the list would act like that.
Either that or someone on the list has something pretty big on Cottan that he needs kept under wraps.
When he was watching the interview with Fairbank he seemed really agitated until he saw it going nowhere.
So that begs the question, is Matthew Cottan his real name?
Or who is on the list that he is working for?

Yes I know he's the caddy, but his main crimes so far has been police corruption/criminal insider. Now he is actively covering up a paedophile ring of which he has no clear affinity with apart from Tommy Hunter, who is dead.
My guess is he is/was himself involved in the abuse at the boys home. To what extent can only be speculated as he would have been a teenager himself during that time?.
Or perhaps he's related to someone on the list who was involved and he is covering for a family member.

People have commented that his gain is purely financial, so unless he is being paid an excessive amount of money to cover it all up, then his only other motive must be self-preservation from someone having something to dangle over his head unless he cooperates.

Cottan wasn’t involved in actual sexual abuse / pedophilia. He was always the middleman

His main crimes are covering up to help criminals, police corruption, perverting the cause of justice, conspiracy to commit murder and other crimes

He changed the plates. I guess he's going to try and frame steve.

Killing Denton and framing Steve was his backup plan. He really wanted Denton to take her money and leave. I guess he suspected she might say no, so he made plans to kill her

He’s the Caddy. He is the go-between for all the guys on that list. The list itself won’t bring him down, but he knows officers like Steve and Kate will investigate and likely find more: their investigation will lead to Dot eventually. Either someone on the list will flip and reveal names, or someone left a loose paper trail leading to Dot etc.

He really didn’t want to kill Denton. He wanted her to just take money and go away
