The director says cause he can't imagine women being as dumb as these creatures! My theory is he hasn't found a single female comedian that he finds funny to mimic. Obviously these guys are based off the three stooges!

I always thought they were hermaphrodite or something, that they divide in two minions, but that was just a thought of mine.

from this movie it is implied that they just appeared from something and don't age. the orginally created minions are the same ones with gru in DM1 & 2. no procreation or division necessary.

My friend and I were talking about this the other day. We decided that they must be hermaphrodites that just have male names.

I thought that the lack of females was part of the joke itself: that minions are so absurd, they can't possibly exist.
