I'm curious as to what people's thoughts are: what do you think attracted Emma to Adele? I understand why Adele, as a teenager, would be attracted to an older university student who seems cultured and confident in her sexuality, but what do you think drew Emma to a high schooler? It must have been more than just physical attraction, as they were together for a number of years.
Because Adele represented purity to Emma. She was not a "seasoned" lesbian who had been with many women: instead she was naive, innocent, shy (but with a glint in her eye that suggested there was a lot going on in her mind) and as someone else put 'demure' and a very unique type in today's extroverted/attention hungry society. Emma was probably attracted to the idea of being Adele's first. Interestingly, Adele's quite nature may have attracted Emma in the beginning but in the end it probably contributed to the demise of their relationship considering Adele never branched out artistically or expressed herself in the way Emma had encouraged her to. The lovely, luminous physical appearance of Adele would have helped entice Emma too.
Bingo, and by the way, she absolutely GLOWED during sex. Some women are that way. The estrogen makes them 10x better looking during sex. That's what I saw with Adele.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Alpha. You're obviously used to the standard conventional definition of a good looking woman. Emma (Lea Seydoux) is beautiful to a lot of people including myself (and nowhere near ugly) but not in a 'mainstream' way. She oozed charisma, confidence and sex appeal, Adele recognised that in the bar immediately. She stood out. Emma's beauty is refreshing and unique, while Adele's was more of a classical and natural beauty.
Agreed. If it's true that much of this film was improvised, then it must be said that Lea Seydoux did an outstanding job as Emma in embodying the confident, seductive, counter-cultural type of young woman that people all over the world have been falling for for generations. I thought all the little flourishes that Seydoux added to Emma's "game", like the way Emma pretended to not hear Adele at the bar as an excuse to lean in closer to her, or the little wink after she kissed Adele on the cheek after their first "date", did a lot to bring the character to life and make the viewer understand why Adele was so captivated by her. Adele was also clearly very bright and intellectually curious for her age (e.g. her genuine interest in literature and cinema), and I think she was fascinated by how Emma, as an older college student, seemed cultured, mature and experienced at being with women. Emma definitely played this angle up in her pursuit of Adele.
Anyway, I'm the OP and I asked the question mostly because I was curious as to how other people read Emma's motivations in pursuing Adele. It's not hard to understand why a person would be attracted to Adele - she was sweet and it's pretty uncontested that she's smoking hot - but some viewers of the film have characterized Emma as being predatory and purposely taking advantage of Adele's youth and inexperience. I personally don't view Emma quite that unsympathetically and think that she was genuinely in love with Adele, but it has to be said that her pursuit of a high school student was a bit sketchy.

I didn't see it that way at all. If anything, Adele almost pursued Emma... albeit accidentally. She ran into her on the street then ended up in the same bar as Emma, one she probably frequented regularly, considering she was quite a seasoned lesbian and seemed to know everyone there. Emma was also in a relationship with Sabine at the time she met Adele and Sabine is clearly closer to Emma's age if not older. If she was a predator interested in inexperienced, sexually curious high schoolers she'd probably have them everywhere. But no, it's clear from the look in her eyes and her motivations (not to mention the devastating break up) that she loved Adele. They were drawn to each other like a moth to a flame in the bar. I'm sure Adele sat down just to wait for Emma to approach her.

i didnt see any weakness, suffering or sacrifice in Emma. components that are often present during love, especially while breakup. while Adele suffered a lot and asked for forgiveness several times but Emma didnt forgive her and remained cold attitude till the end. so i think she didnt love her. or i agree that she loved her like predator would have.
I can't agree there. I think if you saw no weakness or suffering, you must have seen a different movie than I. How about the breakup scene? Or the first time they meet again after that? A lot of emotion there on both sides, not just Adèle.
We don't see as much from Emma because it's La Vie d'Adèle; we don't get any scenes with Emma that don't also have Adèle in it (I believe).
in first situation there was more anger than weakness from Emma. in second, it was more positive emotions than negative. none of them were weaknesses
i agree, we see Adele's point of view most of the time and maybe thats why we dont see Emma's suffering. but the fact is that we dont see Emma's suffering. now pov maybe 1st reason for that and Emma not having weaknesses maybe be 2nd reason, which i think is the case. if she had weakness, she'd show them at least once.
I'm sorry, I still can't agree with you. Yes, Emma got angry in the first setting, but at the very start you could see her crying, and then when Adèle was standing outside trying to get back in you can see that Emma cannot quite keep up her anger continuously and is starting to break down again. In that way, it seemed to me that you could see her weakness and emotion through it very well; she was just trying to keep herself going on her anger. In the second case, while there were indeed positive emotions, you can also clearly see her about to give in when Adèle starts to, well, let's say put the moves on her, and there's crying not just from Adèle but also from Emma. It's true Adèle shows more of it, and they even more or less joke about that "You're always blubbering", but I wouldn't say Emma is showing none. I think it's part personality, but certainly a large part PoV as well.
nothing of what you said can be considered as weakness. yes she was crying but she was not doing anything about it, instead she was acting on being angry. she didn't sacrifice anything, she didn't go against her own anger, she wanted breakup and she got breakup. rational, cold and to the point. that isn't any weakness i've heard of
I already said my piece as to why I thought Emma was take taking advantage of Adele. (at least at first) The very next scene where you see Emma is smoking outside Adele highschool. And it suppose to be by coincidence? Please! That is seeking someone out.
With out highjacking your topic, read my full thoughts on the matter here.
When they were getting to know one another, conversation wise, Adele told Emma where she attended school and gave her her phone number, so one would have to assume that she went there to see Adele, because she had an attraction to her as Adele did to her. This is called getting to know one another, not necessarily stalking. When they at first passed each other on the street, Emma was walking with Sabine, with her arm around her, when she is drawn to Adele's presence; evidently, you missed the dialogue, in the earlier scene in the classroom where Adele's class and teacher are discussing relationships drawn together "through fate". Their lives were joined together through destiny;a force that neither one of them could control😁
She was looking for Emma. She'd seen her earlier and had been having sexual dreams about her. It may not be realistic that she found her but she was "looking" for her. She even said she was there to meet someone. It was sort of a magical realism moment that Adele was craning her neck in search of a fantasy and lo -- there she be.

Fate or destiny, in terms of "chance encounters" and "predestinated events". As discussed in Adele's classroom not long before her encounter on the street with Emma. Do people come into our lives purely by accident or chance? Or is everything pre-determined for us?

Right. I've had several encounters that felt like more than chance. I've been Adele before -- craning my neck for someone I hadn't met yet. When I met my partner of 17 years, I recognized him -- from a dream. Several dreams rather. If not for them, I might have missed him because he had his nose in a book and wasn't my usual time. If I hadn't been recording my dreams at that time I would've missed the dreams themselves.
Firstly, I want to qualify this statement, I am not a lesbian nor gay in any manner speaking. I was introduced to this movie through a write-up I saw about the Cannes movie festival; about how exceptional the acting was of the two main actors, and the reviews the film was getting as being a powerful love story by Steven Spielberg and other noted film people. The reviews were accurate. If anyone is focused strictly on how graphic the sex scenes are, they are missing, what I feel is the true magic of the film. One needs to look beyond these and focus on the message. I have never seen a more powerfully heart wrenching portrayal of love, betrayal and breakup by any actors, let alone two as young as these. I believe both Lea and especially Adele have a very promising future in film. There on film presence was breathtaking.
I actually found it cute the way she ate. Don't know why though, if I would see someone else eat like that I'd probably be disgusted. Adèle, however, has such an extreme natural beauty that it kind of reverses the effect and makes it cute.
