I live in the U.S. and watched Gracepoint, and really enjoyed it so I bought season 1 of Braodchurch on DVD, and am now watching season 2 on BBC. I love the show, my only problem is I have trouble understanding a lot of what Hardy is saying. I don't have trouble understanding any of the other characters, it's like his accent is thicker than the rest. Anyone else have this problem?

This pretty much sums it up. LOVE British TV but for this, Luther, Life on Mars and some others I do have to frequently resort to subtitles.
I thought it was only me hehe.

shareI'm a southern american and have no problem with hearing english accents...but thick scottish dialects get me every time, lol. I notice that the more animated and excited hardy gets, the thicker the accent. He's still one of my favorite actors and, imo, he is underrated.

Im from Long Island NY and was told by a Scottsman that I had an accent
(and I get we do!) but David Tennant's isn't bad... I get almost 100% of
what he said.
Try watching Hannibal and seeing if you can understand what Mads Mikkelsen is
saying all of the time- and I love him.
I guess everyone's ear gets individual accents differently. Btw I watched
Gracepoint 1st b/c I didn't have Netflix yet, and I definitely like
Broadchurch more (better casting, acting,etc).

shareUS here also. My wife has trouble with some of the thicker accents so we turn on subtitles. I don't so much, but sometimes there are words, expressions or sayings that aren't said here that the subtitles show me so I can Google them.
shareThis reminds me of when I first started reading my favourite Scottish author, Irvine Welsh (he's the one who wrote "Trainspotting", amongst many other gems!). He writes in a Scottish accent, and until you get into and hear it in your head, it's almost like reading a completely foreign language :-). Once you get it, though, it's totally awesome!!
By the way, David Tennant's Scottish accent is BY FAR not the worst!!
