Is it really that bad?

With all the talent involved, I thought this was a surefire, well, at least decent movie. But wow is the buzz negative.

No I don't think so.

It was nothing great, but it was decent. Watched the extended version for the record.

Death to mainstream cinema!

I liked The Counselor in a fascinated, detached way, and I've seen it a couple times But I still don't know if the Sinaloan cartel is behind half the killings, or if it's ALL the Cameron Diaz character. In any case, Cormac McCarthy writes some dark stuff. Between this and No Country For Old Men, he has one dark vein in him.

A few days ago I watched Out of the Furnace, which I knew virtually nothing about, except who was in it. The cast was the reason I gave it a chance. I thought it was a bit unoriginal (two hardscrabble brothers, older one has a heart of gold, younger one basically a good dude but prone to getting himself into trouble, older brother has to wade through depths of hell to help him) but I quite liked it. The disc had a couple previews for other movies, one of them was The Counselor. "Holy shit, how did I miss this?! Ridley Scott directing Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz? This HAS to be at least decent." So again, I watched it based only on the cast.

Another unoriginal plot. All in all it wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but it was hard to sit through at times. Some of the dialogue is just so cringe worthy. Philosophical musings that land on the floor like a wet sack of shit. Bardem was a fish out of water or something, he was awful. Worst role I've ever seen him in. Really stupid plot points that make it seem like a fantasy or a dream or something, e.g. this overly elaborate scheme to take down a biker that makes literally zero sense whatsoever.
