Where are you going after this show ends?

I want to follow y'all! From my experience, you are the most intelligent, articulate posters in the IMDB sphere. I can't keep up with all the shows out there, too many channels on TV and Netflix and Prime for me to do so, so I trust that you all being the savvy art lovers you apparently are, know of some other good shows. Where are you going after Rectify [regretfully] says good-bye?

Thanks in advance for suggestions!

How gracious of you to give the board a compliment and I can't speak for anyone else, but as for myself, thank you. I like this forum too and I will miss it when the series ends. My guess is that this board will slowly die out, except for a few stragglers.

I am catching up on series' I've always wanted to watch and Netflix has a lot of them. It's hard to suggest anything without knowing your tastes or what you have already viewed. So far I have watched (in no particular order).....

1. Dexter
2. Orange is the New Black
3. Mad Men
4. Peaky Blinders
5. Penny Dreadful

And I just started Sons of Anarchy. Plus, I've already watched a lot on cable, too numerous to name. A few that I would recommend if you haven't seen them.....

1. Boardwalk Empire
2. Deadwood
3. Justify
4. Breaking bad.

I'm sure others can add what they recommend. Happy viewing!

Thank you! Some great choices in there.

Ill finish the affair season 3, as it airs,
return to the young pope to watch it again when it airs on HBO so i can understand the Italian

most of all, i am waiting for Twin Peaks (in may hopefully)

If you haven't seen the first two season of twin peaks, id recommend getting ready, season 3 is going to be a wild ride, and twin peaks is the only show that really gets me thinking on the level rectify does,

ill be looking forward to bosch season 3,
hulus "chance" is really good, hugh laurie playing a neuropsychiatrist,
hap and leanoard season 2, (sundance's other good show)

i really hope Ray Mackinnon gets a new a show, maybe on a bigger network, and gets Aden young to come along,

when ever true detective comes back i will be there, if it comes because, hopefully it comes back
the same can be said about the knick,

forgot to mention fargo, that is always good for discussions,

unfortunately nothing is like rectify(or fortunately depending on your outlook)
although i will stress Twin Peaks, i am 27, and ive been waiting 25 year:(
ok slight exaggeration, more like 12 years,

Broadchurch for sure, and there are toher shows in the pipeline that i know i will be watching, but again, nothing as ripe for discussion as rectify,

I wonder where sign_in will go, i might be inclined to follow for the *beep* and giggles

I've seen pretty much everything I ever wanted to see, I'm thinking about just rewatching The Sopranos, Seinfeld & The X-Files when I get time to dig out my dvd's from moving boxes.

Since another poster recced many good shows, I'll just put over many David Simon shows instead of repeating.
Homicide: Life On The Street - Gritty network police procedural set in Baltimore that tries to avoid every trope of network procedurals. 7 Seasons & a Movie.

The Corner - 6 part mini-series detailing the true lives of some junkies & their surroundings in Baltimore.

The Wire - Set in Baltimore following cops of all ranks, drug lords and their underlings on the street, regular people, 5 seasons, each season following a different industry but linked. Fantastic characters and probably my fave show, gets better the more I rewatch it.

Generation Kill - Based on a true life Battalion invading Iraq in 2003, a 7 part series, closest to a modern day war version of Band Of Brothers & The Pacific, yet a very different style of warfare.

Treme - A 4 season slice of life show set in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina infused with many musical performances. I always think this show is as close to being similar to Rectify as I've seen.

Show Me A Hero - A 6 part mini-series set between 1987 - 1994 about the politicians & homeowners during the housing desegregation in Westchester County. A must see if you're an Oscar Isaac fan.

First one was on NBC the other 5 were on HBO.

I'll also pimp Oz (Great 6 season Prison show), The Night Of (Mini-series bout the judicial system), Fargo (Quirky crime anthology) & Stranger Things (Like Spielberg, Stephen King, The X-Files & Silent Hill in a blender, a homage to everything but somehow turns out to be much fun to watch).
Few things to look into.

reply

i completely forgot about OZ, only because i was focusing more on shows that can be followed and discussed while fresh

The Birth of the Golden age of cable television goes as follows
Twin peaks(network drama i know, but it sewed the seeds) -> Oz -> Sopranos -> six feet under -> breaking bad(some people would include mad men, but really, do i want to watch jon hamm drink smoke and fck?)
Maybe its Death comes with the end of Rectify, sorta a swan song for a really good Era

I forgot to mention the Leftovers in my previous post, but season 3 should be starting in the spring,
and the boards are very active, but not overactive with children(walking dead... game of thrones)

And if you haven;t watched the Knick do yourself a favor, and do so, just not while eating,

I watched Twin Peaks when it was first on, I pretty much view it as a carry over from 80's soap operas (which isn't meant as an insult), it followed on well from Dynasty/The Colby's elements, The Colby's was cancelled after 2 seasons ending with a main character being abducted by Aliens. I lapped up all the weird shows that followed, Wild Palms, The Outer Limits, The X-Files, Millennium, Strange Luck, American Gothic, etc etc. I love seeing Twin Peaks influence carry on today in many things.

You're doing Don Draper a disservice there, there's way more to the character (and the show Mad Men) than smoking, boozing & womanising, you don't get Best Lead Actor Emmy nominated 8 years in a row for that, that was his shield to hide who he really was, which isn't a cheerful story I'll admit but it's offset by the rest of the cast of colourful characters and their antics.

I'll also 2nd The Leftovers, i hope the final season is as great as Season 2, I loved that the most.
I also can't believe I forgot The Americans, which is right up there in acting & writing quality alongside Rectify. It can convey so much with minimal dialogue.

I agree with Fluffykins on the subject of Mad Men and Jon Hamm being extremely overrated. I watched 4 seasons of MM with a completely open mind on both the show and the lead performance and was left cold. As for Emmys - we all know how out of touch with actual TV quality they are these days. How can you take them seriously when Rectify has gotten zero attention despite rave critical reviews for 4 years?

I find MM kind of a fraud of a show. It has this classy, serious veneer, but no actual substance under the surface. It presents a whole heap of important themes, but never has the courage to address them in depth, with emotional honesty or creativity. It stifles its actors too, not allowing for organic performances. It's basically 'serious TV drama-lite'.

reply

Treme... I always think this show is as close to being similar to Rectify as I've seen.

I share that impression.

Mickeymyhorse ~ you have excellent taste in TV viewing and have mentioned most of my favorites!

reply

Thank you, Mismia. I enjoy a good series. I work bizarre hours and I love to come home, continue with whichever series I'm watching, have a glass of wine (or 2) and unwind. It's ME time!

reply

Homeland returns in January, so there's that for me.

Then Outlander returns in the spring; Game of Thrones in July. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) is currently in Taiji, Japan, speaking out on behalf of those poor dolphins that are being slaughtered. The Leftovers (great novel!) also returns next year, I think for its final season.

As for Rectify ending, I haven't felt this bereft about a series wrapping up since Lost. Also from that era, Deadwood; Six Feet Under; Big Love; Battlestar Galactica: Reimagined Series and Caprica. Loved them all.

Wish Revolution; The Returned; Resurrection didn't end. Family, I was not so enamored of, but I would have liked an ending, to find out why the son decided to trade places with the other captive child.

Need to get back to House of Cards (still on season 2); Treme (didn't watch the final season); The Killing (need to watch the last two seasons) - have much to catch up on. Recorded the final episodes of Wallander, haven't watched them yet.

Someone told me to "Walk, Don't Run to see Oz." Never saw that; The Wire; Breaking Bad. I plan to. (Saw the final episode only of Breaking Bad, mostly because I love that song.)

So, lots of TV viewing to keep me occupied as far as TV goes.

A lot of people are praising Durrells in Corfu.

For lighter fare (mostly; some drama in it), I recommended a sleeper - Ballykissangel, set in an exurb of Dublin, from the early part of this century.

I know I'm missing a lot more, like the Gillian Anderson detective series. So much good stuff on TV, where to find the time whether one has a busy life or not? I also love going to the movies. Manchester-By-The-Sea (featuring "Janet's" husband Kenneth Lonergan as writer and director) is the top of my list for the next film to see. What a talented couple!

I'm a big fan of the performing arts, no matter what the medium. It sort of irks me that people say TV is a waste. A good story is a good story, no matter how it's presented. I think we've been experiencing another Golden Age of Television since the debut of Homicide: Life on the Streets. Although one could go back earlier, with St. Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues.

Hope to see all of you on the boards in the coming months!

Go watch Oz, (as long as you can handle male nudity, )

can;t wait for outlanders next season, really interested to see how they age Jamie 20 years,

RIP Black jack randal, you sick, sadistic child rapist...who made the show fun

reply

Black Jack is so different than Edmure Tully that I didn't even recognize the fabulous actor Tobias Menzies!

reply

Dame Maggie smith doesn't get her visit from Menzies frequently enough conisidering her age...
i wonder if they kept edmure tully on the back burner because he was busy with outlander, only pulling him out when the BJR role was done,

Frank Randal isn't necessarily gone , i do hope they get tobias menzies for a few episodes,

my grand parents live in england, are scottish,(explains why i woke up from drinking at 4am to start drinking, insomnia is a bitch)they are in their 80's

i was horrified when my mum got my grandma outlander season 1 for her birthday last year, my mum laughs about it, lol although as expected those final two episodes were a little hard on grandpa, i mean with all the rape on TV it ususally isn't 2 hours of guy on guy rape, and date rape.

she got season 2 for her this year.... i just hope my granpa doesn't have a fing coronary when the 11 year old fergus gets butt raped by BJR

i really need to start reading the books though, despite being a heterofexible male who abores romance,

reply

Did Arya rescue her uncle from the Frey dungeon on her way from killing Walder Frey. Frey to Jame "Edmure's in his cell" and all is well yada yada yada.

I can see some of the BJR Randall in Frank, maybe something that runs in the family since Frank isn't a direct descendant of BJR (that we know about so far), when Frank burns Claire's 17th century garb without her permission.

Menzies looks younger in GoT than in Outlander; maybe being a sadist ages one's skin.

reply

if arya didn't rescue Edmure she must really big a big Jamie/Claire shipper

I think he burnt the clothes not out of sadism, half out of frustration and disappointment, but to help claire move on,

i haven't read the books, because i don't have a vagina, but from what i have gathered, frank actually kept looking for Jamie even after he told claire to stop looking,

BJR looks older then frank, but that is caused by his heavy tan, no SPF in thoose days

reply

lol suntan lotion 😃

Frank burning the clothing reminded me of Rita's husband burning her textbooks in Educating Rita.

I just started reading the first book. Deeper than I thought it would be. Lots of history and folklore. But I am more of a Russell Banks fan when it comes to popular literature.

Sorry for the abundance of posts, but if you haven't watched Westworld already, Sunday night is the finale,

i missed out on most of the discussions by getting far behind and avoiding spoilers,
its like deadwood, meets lost, meets Skynet,

the production value is awesome, it isn't rectify, but it can make one ponder about the future of artificial intelligence, and Americas need for incessant violence

reply

Wow, OP, what a compliment.

Well, I've just finished Masters of Sex, and sincerely hoping that it's not cancelled, but the hope is slim. I highly recommend it. I'm currently watching the 2nd season of Fargo. I don't like it quite as much as the 1st, but it is loads of fun. Thinking of starting Good Behaviour after I finish that.

reply

As for comedies/dramedies, I will also watch S3 of Jane the Virgin and will eventually get around to the Gilmore Girls revival (which I've already fully spoiled for myself😞).

reply

i actually prefered season 2, after everything was said and done

reply

Of which show? If you're talking about Fargo, your opinion seems to be the consensus.

I guess it's a matter of genre for me. S1 was a classic morality fable with minimal graphic violence, and it was very addictive - I swallowed it in a couple of sittings. S2 is bordering too close on the gangster genre (which you can't pay me to watch), and the amount of violence seriously cheapens its dramatic impact. There is no impetus to binge it either - I'm taking my sweet time, watching each ep individually several days apart.

reply

I'll be going to Season 2 of Bloodline, a great Netflix original.

I really enjoyed Season 1 of Fargo and Season 1 of True Detective. I also recommend Hell on Wheels, Justified and Black Mirror (Netflix).

reply

I just binged a marvellous new piece of Nordic noir called Midnight Sun. It's a French-Swedish co-production from the team behind the original The Bridge and filmed in the Arctic circle. It's an absolute knock-out and it's even partially in English (although the accents make it a bit tough to understand sometimes).

reply

Ooh, have to keep an eye out for it. Thanks!
