So they went full retard...

A lot had been said about the movie. I don't need to emphasis further.

I'm one of those lovers of the original. I can't say I hated this movie. It had its moments. And that's the problem really. It only had moments. Felt like a sketch comedy. It had none of the humanity of the original. From the first gag and onwards, it was a self parody.

What made the original so successful and time-tested, was the humanity of characters. They were guys we could relate to. And the funny situations they found themselves in was a result of their innocence coupled with their lower-than-average intelligence. No matter how dumb they appeared to be, it was still believable.

Not here. From scene to scene, it felt as if we were watching an SNL sketch stretched over the length of a movie. These weren't the same characters anymore. The absurd level was turned to 11. It was simply an homage movie to the 1st, where everything is overblown to the max.

So yeah, they went full retard here. Nothing was relatable anymore. The only saving grace was the nostalgia aspect. We loved the 1st, so we were able to generally "accept" this, despite it not being a good movie. Don't get me wrong, it had its moments, some funny ones, but as a full-length standalone, it's simply not good.

Looking from that perspective, yeah, you're right. I hated Dumb and Dumber To because they just recycled the same jokes from the original movie, forced jokes they thought would be funny and just not likeable characters anymore.

The absolute worst scene was the one with that old horny lady.

"So they went full retard" - isn't that the point of the dumb & dumber movies?

Exactly, I think this movie was good, opening weekend numbers were Over budget cost, and Gross was over DOUBLE. So obviously the movie didn't bomb, it WASNT that bad...everyone in my theater laughed their asses off, everyone I know liked this movie. I've seen MUCH worse. After all, this was a FAN FILM ONLY...it wasn't supposed to be a work of art....people need to get off their high horse, grow up, and quit complaining over the internet...it obviously shows you have NO LIFE WHATSOEVER....period!!!

Aren't they all full retard? Isn't that what we liked about the original?

Back then it was the right time for such a movie.
Now it's not anymore.

Are you talking about the movie? Or IMDB? Maybe both?

The owls are not what they seem.

I don’t buy this ‘the characters were innocent’ in the first film revisionism. Lloyd especially is borderline sociopathic - he fantasises about gunning down Mary’s husband when they’re finally reunited. He fantasies about impressing her by violently tearing the heart out of a chef, he gives a blind kid a dead budgy with its severed head taped back on. He’s filled with a jealous rage over Harry and Mary, drives around cackling maniacally, and exhibits a Satanic delight in poisoning Harry with laxative.

That’s just for starters, and that’s with everything dialled back from the Unrated Version, where the hot-tub scene alone makes Lloyd appear very mean-spirited and creepy.

I think the ‘I’m tired of having nobody’ speech went a long way to endearing us to Lloyd. This time around we only get heartfelt moments from him toward the end, while Harry handles the emotional heavy lifting for most of the movie, and they removed his violent streak.
