I loved Yuri

I gave the movie an "8," but probably would rated it higher if Yuri had not been the first to go. The other characters: I had seen their types before, but Yuri was unique. He had a bright side and a dark side, and more could have been done with his character. Once he exits, the plot settles into something that I have seen before. I thought the movie played the cliches of the genre well, but Yuri added some real edge.

I didn't think Yuri was that special, really? I'd say Paul was the most likeable, interesting, and original of the characters. You don't really see his type as the lead to a movie.

Hahahah are you serious? Paul was an idiotic douchebag. Besides Yuri, Michael is the only other character worth a damn.

Agreed. Nothing special about Yuri at all. Paul and Amanda were my favourites.

I liked Yuri too, but I never had the feeling that he knew about the mutants at all. When he sees the small bed of ashes he realizes people had been there recently, however he understands that by drawing attention to it he will alarm the members of the group, so he covers it up. In the end he was just wanting to make a buck, so it was important that he make his tourist groups feel at least somewhat safe.

Although he's nice character but there's always something wrong/weird with his behavior throughout his movie screen time.

We can't be sure whether he knew or not about the mutant. There's possibility that he knew.

Why he brings a gun all along the trip but only leave it in the car. When they get out and go picnic outside, he didn't take it along. So the gun is quite useless when something gone wrong outside when they walk far away the car, inside those building.

Why did he take the gun and suddenly decide to go outside in darkness?! Just 'coz he heart something, some weird noise from nowhere?
+ If he assumed there're wolf out there, why would he went out to hunt them instead of staying inside with the gun prepairing for the upcoming risk (they may or may not come again that night, why would you go out and increase danger for yourself).
+ If he knew there're some sort of mutant around there in the darkness, why would he get out?! One personal gun is not enough for that case anyway. Nobody with right mind would go out at midnight with a single gun to fight those things in a very impatient way like that.

He saw that still-warm ashes and hide it from the rest. Maybe he knows something was going on there. Maybe he just assumed there're another tourist team get into that building and just leave before they came. We never know for sure.

He saw the cable got cut and it was CUT, not eat or tear by animal. What did he think that moment?...

+ How about those mutant? The mutant doesn't seem to be smart enough to sneak inside the car and secretly cut it while keep everything else remain pretty clear and safe. They just come and bang the car to piece or some more noisy way.
+ Some specified soldiers going around that zone and silently break their car function without let the victim aware of. And leave the victim in the unknown fear of something supernatural?! They can simply wait around that car location and arrest all of them when they come back, but they didn't, right?...

So whether he knew or not about mutants, his behavior and motivation still very weird to me while I watch this movie :D but other than weird, it's ok to watch. Could be worse.

Yes, yes. Yuri was the character in the group with whom I could most relate (I served in the Marines) and I waited for the moment when he would open up a can of Spetsnaz on the kids because they couldn't keep their cool in a not-so-good situation. I kept waffling on whether or not Yuri had set them up (think Hostel) and didn't know just how much I should root for him. I guess we found out.

Objection, your Honor. You can't preface your second point with first of all.

After Uri found that the car wires had been chewed, it seems they all just sat in the van until it got dark, and then he got out to investigate a noise -which of course led to his demise.(I never knew why he thought he had to investigate the roar anyway.) Wouldn't you think a tour operator would have started walking to the checkpoint to get help as soon as he found the car wouldn't start? Even if they were there illegally and he would get in trouble with the guards, there really wasn't any other choice, and he had a gun for protection. I know it was late in the day, but it doesn't get dark that fast.

I was suspicious of Yuri because I thought it was going to be a HOSTEL type situation. But he turned out to be a victim even though it was mutants and not sadistic thrill killers. But why kick the ash out of the way so the others could not see it ? Forwarned is forarmed.
