Is it me, or did they screw up Buzz's character?

In the previous films, once Buzz had realised and gotten over the fact that he was a toy, he seemed a natural and confident leader. One who would put his neck on the line, and wouldn't leave a toy behind.

In the fourth film he didn't come across like that. Once Woody was lost, he didn't seem to know what to do. He just floundered. It didn't help that they slightly overdid the 'inner voice' joke. It was funny the first couple of times, but it began to make him look a bit moronic towards the end. Buzz had never shown any reluctance to make decisions before.

Also, when Woody and Bo fell out about going back for Forky, Buzz at first wanted to give up. In the previous movies, I don't see that as being in character. He'd have stood with Woody.

Buzzz represents smalltown and bluecollars characters, while Woody is more of a urbanite one. The contrast between them was one the themes in early Toy Story movies.

Times are changing, Disney owns Pixar now. Bluecollars and working class are some new bad guys in modern SJW Hollywood. It was predictable that Buzzz was going to be portrayed as a moron. Be happy they didn't make him go rapey-rapey and start to sexually harass Barbies, blinking the eye and saying 'Do you wanna see my laser gun, baby?'.

Just rewatched TS2, and in that one Buzz successfully leads the difficult and often dangerous rescue of Woody from Al's Toy Barn. In doing so Buzz shows himself to be a competent and decisive leader, capable of making quick decisions on the fly, and making bold, and risky maneuvers when necessary. And in the end not only does he rescue his friend, safely return his entire team home in time, but he lands himself a cowgirl.

In this one, the whole "inner voice" gag makes him seem clueless, and unable to make decisions on his own. And while ultimately he was successful, it seemed more by luck this time. He did have one great moment when he yelled to Bonnie that she left her backpack at the store, without her realizing that he said that.

Woody has changed too, he was a lot more scornful and sarcastic in the first two films, in TS3 and more noticeably TS4 he's become a real goody two-shoes, Buzz went from being pack leader to meek and mild background character status.

These characters were bossed around a lot in TS4, especially Woody. I didn't agree with how they were portrayed, but I still enjoyed the movie.

I think he was more sarcastic in the first one, and that was more down to jealousy of all the attention Buzz was suddenly getting.

Once they'd got over that conflict, I think both Woody and Buzz had grown as characters by the second one.

I think they just shoehorned his character in. He didn’t seem central to the plot.

Yea, they did. They also ruined Bo Peep’s character and Woody’s. Basically the took everything we loved about the characters from the first three movies and gave us the complete opposite. Buzz is such a dunce here. Bo Peep was so rude and bossy and Woody was a “yes dear” type of man/toy. Shame. Should have ended with TS3. This feels like a spin-off tv special on the Disney channel.

Neither Buzz nor Woody was a leader in this one. They made Bo into a pushy bitch and gave her the movie.
