The Hollywood Ending

Immediately after the film ended I thought to myself, 'that would have been so much more interesting if they had just left off that whole last scene'.
It was a classic case of the Hollywood tidy ending, the feel good ending, the everything is in it's right place so I can feel comfortable now ending.
Why not the ambiguous ending that keeps us scratching our heads and talking and guessing?

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Yeah, and it was all the more disappointing because of how the movie didn't take the Hollywood route the rest of the movie, particularly with the Juniper character. A better ending would have been for Mud to get caught soon after he drops off Ellis at the hospital.

I liked the ending, but I can see the OP's point. I don't like tacked-on happy endings, but I don't think this qualifies as such. Also, it is a great improvement from the ending of Take Shelter.

Personally, I have nothing againt a feel-good ending and I feel this movie deserved one. I would've like it if Ellis found out that Mud is alive, altough I think he had this thought.

Here is a lot of talk about the (possible) how a good ending, and I have suggested as a script writer not as personal. often selfishness a writer because of his/her views, even though many who wrote the screenplay with story order from the Director or producer, arguably I was the type of the first.

I won't discuss into the second type, the second type is ending because of orders.

For the matter of ending (first type) actually depends on how the writer's own point of view, how he looked at life. There are some writers who think that the movie will look is alive "not whether life will always be a happy ending? The answer is not "" did all the mysteries will be revealed? the answer is not "Yep it is two questions that became the main points and I believe all know what I'm talking about.

For the ending of the Mud I think better not need scenes ending where Mud proved to be treated in a ship, it was too overwhelming for me and impressed audiences feel satisfied to be imposed and the missing curious whether the Mud was killed or live, and this is not a hollywood ending, many countries in the world including my country have too forced ending film, too forced for happy ending or too forced to revealed the entire mystery.

What would be the reason for leaving it ambiguous? Would it add any sort of element to what's been established?

Hey folks,

This is responsive to the original poster, Emathers, and his questions about the "tidy ending."

At my age in life, I have seen enough of the misery of "real world" life. I do not need more misery in my entertainment. Given the "facts" as depicted in the film, I can live with the idea that the guy Mud killed deserved it. I found I liked Mud and was rooting for him to get away. I am also romantic enough to have been rooting for Mud and his girlfriend to get away together - until it was revealed that she was not loyal to him.

There is something about loyalty that means a great deal to me. That is why I liked the two boys so much - they developed a loyalty to Mud and he to them. Yes, I know that people are not all loyal; I have seen it all my life. But that does not mean that I should not value loyalty, and it does not mean that I should not enjoy it as part of my entertainment.

So, tidy Hollywood ending? Feel good ending? Maybe so, but that is what I like in my entertainment; I know I will more often than not be disappointed in real world life.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

I burst out laughing (with glee) when we saw Sam Shepard sailing away in the boat. To me, the movie should have ended right there. I could have lived with the fact that maybe or maybe not Mud is dead. But then Sam descends the stairs of the boat and we find Mud.

What is it with dick-boys who always have a problem with a slightly upbeat ending.

I am sick of films stopping in the middle of a scene. Finish the damn story, good or bad. And sorry, it doesn't have to be a "Hollywood ending" but I am rather tired of going to see movies and being depressed afterwards.

You already wrote the same comment in 2014, dumbass http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1935179/board/nest/214172177?d=224646207#224646207
We get it, you're stupid and you need a happy ending spelling out everything for you. Go watch an animated movie, moron

I agree.

But you can interpret it as ambiguous if you want.

You can interpret the last seen as Mud's dying dream.
