Correct, but there are many parts of the story that make zero sense even with that explanation. The biggest ones being, everything dealing with Rose, the end, and why Lyla didn't watch Michael at all times. They do set up that they are near the end of their relationship. Honestly, no one seemed like they liked each other. Locking your mentally stable friend that used to be unstable in a room over what they might do is *beep* Not only does it make the person think they are crazy you can't be sure of their activities. Basically, they were a bunch of really horrible people that valued debauchery, deception, apathy, and ignorance over anything else. The two that weren't this, Micheal became all of those and a murderer. Rose, in any other story would be the final girl. She dies in bed from poisoning while having pre/post-conigtive visions. She was the only one that knew what was happening but she was too overwhelmed by having tons of *beep* things happen to her one after another. Her "friends" are too self-absorbed to get her help. Back to your explanation, that is what they were going for. Its just that for the analogy to coincide with Lyla meeting Lyla the world or even galaxy would need end. They didn't address that ending the loop kills the snake or that letting it continue will also kill it. So....what is considered part of the snake?
