Did anyone NOT see it coming?

I really tried to enjoy this movie. Geoffrey rush is amazing, and the intial setup certainly was intriguing.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

- But if you don't realize that there's something not right with Billy, the mechanic, and Claire, regarding their relationships with him, you've probably never seen any other movies.

And when we first see his vault & it's contents, if you didn't immediately realize he was going to be robbed, then you've probably not watched much TV, either.

After the first 15 minutes, I found the rest of the movie tedious, just waiting to see if, maybe just maybe, something NOT completely expected would happen.

Alas ......

friends I have recommended this film to have complained about this. I'm glad I'm not someone that immediately tried to solve a twist etc and just watches the film and enjoys it. Of course something wasn't right but I knew I wouldn't win a car or anything if I guessed the twist early on. It didn't spoil it for me in short. I found it a fantastic film

Believe me, I'm not trying to be snobby, or prove how smart I am. It was just incredibly obvious.

- And once you see it coming, the movie gets quite boring.

A shame, becasue all of the performances were stellar, and I also really liked the overall feel & cinematography.

But, this movie failed to deliver for me. Also because Billy's actions, in relation to his motivation & his relationship with his friend, make very little sense.

goopd because youre not coming off as smart

I could not agree with you more. I was enjoying the movie in general, loved the performance, and I was hoping it would not turn out to be so predictable.last part was really disappointing.

reply

Same here. Tornatore was not himself. And this movie is quite inferior compared to Malena, anyway...

reply

Yes - disappointing instead of boring.
I mean, they are explicitly talking about fake love and fake diseases. The fail was there was no twist.
And strange to me, too. What is the message? An attractive women who is both perfect actress and whore is able to fool an old male virgin? Surprise, surprise.

This. That Virgil was being scammed seemed SO obvious that I figured there must actually be another scam or a double-cross coming. When it turned out to be the obvious scam, I guess I felt triple-crossed.

Yes, I saw it coming too. It was obvious there was sth wrong with the girl. Too many coincidences, crystal clear that the girl was pretending and that she had sth to do with the vault.

I didn't see it coming, it dawned on me about 20 mins before the scene, and I can honestly say that I have seen a lot of movies. I think that I was too distracted with lush scenery and the character of Virgil. Whether you see it or not depends on the mood you're in when you're watching the movie. If you approach it with an open mind, "close your eyes" and let it take you on a journey, the heist becomes not so much predictable (with all respect to your opinion).

Now, I watch most of the movies in that "critical" mood, rarely relaxing and letting the movie fold out like the director intended. Also, I think that this was the directors idea of a cover up, you should be so engaged with the automaton, their relationship and their individual characters that the heist sort of sneaks up on you...

I did see it coming, and I'm not usually very fast at that sort of thing. Didn't see it coming in Sixth Sense or Shutter Island, or in You're Next, or Now You See Me.

But here, what bothered and even irritated me, was the fawning servitude of both Robert and Billy. Robert in particular is a young man culturally opposite to the snobby and humanity-despising old Virgil. Why would he be so constantly super-nice to Virgil? And his protestations that he doesn't care for money seemed too much. Sort of stuff the Italians might buy.

Same goes for Billy. Just too loyal.

Rem thinking How could this odious old snot have such loyal and worthwhile friends as he had in Robert and Billy.

Then along comes Claire. She is 27, and Virgil must be in his 60s. It's ridiculous. And her Come here, piss off, come here, piss off routine is just too much. You can see she is manipulating him.

But the fact you can predict a twist does not mean that the film failed. TBO is a old-fashioned kind of flick, steady pace, no pyrotechnics, and it delivers too.

I see things that never were and say WHAT THE..!.

I'm curious when did you excactly see this coming.

For me it was when Virgil was hiding behind the statue in her house spying. It was obvious to me that Robert had planned this with Claire. To their credit Claire positioned herself perfectly so Virgil could get a glimpse of her perfect body.

I never suspected Billy before the painting was revealed.

reply

According to the reviews I read about this movie I realized that many did not understand.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

Billy was the lover of Claire.
She says her boyfriend was older than her and left her in the restaurant in Prague.
Virgil Billy betrayed because he never believed he was a good artist and belittling his career.

reply

What she actually said was that her older boyfriend was killed in an auto accident in Prague.

I saw it coming but I still liked the way it played out. They probably dropped too many hints along the way that it was a scam operation, I do agree with that.
