U.S. Remake is coming!!!

http://asiapacificarts.usc.edu/article@apa?hollywood_remake_of_the_rai d_in_the_works_17418.aspx

The Indonesian producers are apparently going to be involved, as well as the original fight choreographers but this is Hollywood.

Who do you guys think they will cast as the SWAT team members and then the villain?

I have a feeling that Hollywood might just cast someone like Collin Farrell, Vin Diesel,Channing Tatum, or Tyrese Gibson. Then they would add Cung Le and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as the villains. I would hope they would add some Hong Kong Action stars like Donnie Yen but chances of that are probably slim.

Hey it might solve some of its shortcomings. Here's a great review of the movie: http://cinemabeans.blogspot.com/2012/04/raid-redemption-or-seemingly-guilty.html

Trejo as Maddog??? Are you on DRUGS? The guys in this movie dishing out the moves are seriously trained martial arts people. Are you saying the remake is going to have conventional 'fake punch' fights instead? Thats what makes this movie, high speed moves, guys getting the edges of tables in the small of their backs, slams to what looks like concrete floors, etc. Just dub the friggin thing and be done with it, dont screw it up.

ƒuck Hollowood and ƒuck their endless piss-stream of remakes. Do yourself a favor and go see the original Indonesian version. It will kick your balls straight into your throat and leave you gasping for more! Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself. If you're an action fan you wont regret it.

Agreed. See the real version! It is worth it! Exciting, fun, suspenseful in parts, and well done all around. Forget watching some stupid remake that will not be nearly as impressive and starring some hollywood pretty-boy. See the real thing, made for nothing, yet worth your time and money.

Cheers mate!

There isn't enough of the "right" talent in Hollywood to pull off this film in a remake. Plus, Hollywood producers are generally known for sabotaging legacies with their terrible remakes. I mean they couldn't even remake their own american genre(slasher films), how could they possibly be confident they could replicate one of Asia's greatest film of America's weakest genre(martial arts films)?

The unique style that asians shoot their martial arts films(with the least possible cutaways as possible)is something that I notice Hollywood is notoriously bad at. The Expendables had so many zoom ups and cutaways during the action and fighting scenes that half the time you had no idea what was going on.

I loved The Raid and I have no interest in the remake, but using The Expendables as a comparison is off base since it is not a Martial Arts film. The Expendables also suffered from terrible editing which made the fights impossible to see at times.

I am not huge on kung fu flicks, they usually have to be really good like Ong Bak or The Raid to keep my interest and even The Raid had fights which just dragged on for too long. I much prefer a military style close combat fight, but Hollywood can't even do that right these days. I'm looking forward to The Expendables 2, but otherwise Hollywood gives me no faith when it comes to action flicks.

@ brendanfoy

Not a huge fan of kung fu flicks, unless its really good like Ong Bak? Making a serious point then. Ong Bak was the biggest pile of dross I'd seen in a long time

reply

Just got home from watching The Raid.. LOVED it.

That said, this article pleases me, and it has nothing to do with the fact that there will be a Hollywood remake, but rather EVERYTHING to do with the fact that Gareth Evans declined to direct it because why...?

He is working on the sequel :O

The remake might be good, might not. Might bring something new to it. If I decide to go see it, I go see it, if not, I don't. Won't affect the fact that the first version is amazing. But the fact that Evans is working on a sequel makes news of a remake completely irrelevant because we have more of this to come. So fear not! Hopefully it'll be made within two years!!

Yeah. Too bad they won't hire him if it's going to be a big bugdet movie.

A straight-up remake is pointless so they should go for a different type of action & flesh out the story more like others have suggested. It could turn out to be worth a rental but I doubt it'll be nearly as good as the original. Hopefully, it'll get people to see the original.

Why should it be a big budget movie? As far as I know the first wasn't a big hit in cinemas so there should be no reason to make a 150+ Mio. Dollar remake, right?
I live in Germany and here nobody besides big movie geeks even knows the film...

can they really improve awesome?

If it's a studio flick then I'm sure they'll make it PG13, lose the blood (there won't be blood sprayed from exploding heads hit at point blank), they'll cut WAY back on the action and try to build up the story more.

For those that never saw The Raid it'll be great and for those that did it'll be a disappointment.

That's my guess based on what typically happens.

Yes a US remake is jsut what is needed - I mean look at all those other excellent remakes that have been so much better than the orginal, like ....... or perhaps there was ......

Really though a remake of action film which is hardly the most dialogue heavy film

reply

Exactly.

The only good remakes I can think of is Let Me In (2010) not that it was better than Let the Right One In, and The Ring which I won't deny, I actually liked better than Ringu but those are really just exceptions to the norm.

So when stepping back and looking at track record of American remakes of over-seas flicks, the outlook isn't that great.

Americans remaking a foreign film? What a colossal shock to my system

I actually think remaking this movie is not such a bad idea. The key of remaking this movie will be about changing the concept of action. I think US action movies such as diehard is more about gun fighting and tactical decisions in the action story and I feel US action movies always have a smoother storyline than action movies from other country.

What is good about this original movie is that they almost completely abandoned the story of the movie and only use short descriptions just to link the movie, which actually worked fine. Another advantage about this movie is the martial art fighting actions are very good and very brutal. US movies cannot really have that.

So my advice of the remake:

1. Less knife fighting and complex martial art skills but think about using more brutal strength, explosives and guns, which is the US’s advantage.

2. Stronger storyline, a bit more details about gangster, trickery and the brother’s relationship.

3. One very important thing they need to do and learn from the originals; not too much cheesy lines, it will ruin the movie. I liked the line the brother said about the clothes fitting to imply their lives. Please don’t say that in the remake, just clearly describe them in the story.

4. I don’t mind a high budget approach; it is one of the US movie strength as well. Use them.

I feel the police squat died too quickly in the movie to show more heroism of the main actor. I think a more gradual struggle of death of each police officer is a lot better approach for the US remake. Choose the actors very carefully; really cannot focus on the personal heroism too much due to the marital art disadvantage.

reply

I'm not trying to be smart here but what you just described sounds exactly like The Expendables to me, possibly with a few less cheesy lines.

My feeling is this film is a once off. A remake will end up looking and feeling nothing like the original and will be a lesser film because of it.

The Raid has two strengths, high energy martial arts and skull-cracking brutality. An American remake will presumably have neither thing, so what's the point?

reply

They just don't get it do they? The reason this film is so successful is because it gets us AWAY from the endless waves of drivel we usually get over here.
