Has TMNT (2012) officially "jumped the shark"?

With the whole Seth Green as Leonardo's new voice actor thing? Granted, I wouldn't be surprised if Jason Biggs got himself fired over his offensive behavior on Twitter, and Biggs hadn't bee doing Leo's voice in a while anyway (w/ Dominic Catrambone filling-in). It's just that the change (even if they lamp-shaded the change) is a bit too jarring, since Green's natural voice (not his "Chris Griffin voice") is much deeper than Biggs' and Catrambone's (Catrambone sounded somewhat like Biggs, even though his voice as Leo was slightly higher and more nasally).

That's... not what jumping the shark mean... I thought this was going to be about the Kraang invasion. I do agree with your opinion on the voice though..not a fan.

I don't see how the Kranng invasion is "jumping the shark".

It jumped it the second they mutated Karai and took her out of the show. Ratings are proving this too. Since Karai got mutated, the ratings have been dismal. It won't be long till either they have to change something, or the show will get cancelled.

It's already been renewed for a fourth season and since the season two finale has been getting a lot of positive feedback it won't be cancelled any time soon. Also, Karai was always a recurring character never the main character so the idea that that is the reason for the ratings decline is baseless. Not to mention that the ratings have been going up and down since before her mutation.

reply

Actually, the claim isn't baseless. They were never in the 1.6 million range until her mutation and departure from the show. They should have gotten rid of Casey and kept Karai. And just because they are renewed for a forth season, doesn't mean they can go through with it. Anything can happen to cause it to get cancelled. When it was being renewed, it was bringing in 3 million viewers. Now it's 1.6.

And oh, Seth Green is awful. He alone makes me want to stop watching the show.

Sorry, but realistically that is not going to happen. And actually the lowest rating was 1.3 so really the rating have went up not down. But anyway it is baseless to say that rating went down because of a character who was never a regular was mutated. As opposed to other factors such as timeslots. Also, Casey is a fan favorite and if you think they should haven gotten rid of him then you're not being realistic.

From what I've seen most people like Seth Green. There hasn't been any real backlash against him.

reply

Actually, the backlash is pretty big, from twitter, facebook to tumblr, and even the fan sites like technodrome. I'm pretty confident if the show doesn't start to change it's stride, it will be cancelled. Nick is already putting in other stuff in it's time slot when a new episode is not being aired, and they moved it to Friday nights. Networks do that when they want to get rid of a show.

I haven't' seen it. And for the record you can cherry pick anything from twitter, facebook, and especially tumblr and call it a huge backlash. Also, I don't think you know what you're talking about. They've been changing time slots since season two and it's already been renewed for season four. Also, they've been showing a marathon of TMNT so I doubt they want to show to get cancelled.

Biggs deserved to be fired. He crossed the line way too many times and was given too many chances. The same thing happened to Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men. CBS finally had enough of all the trouble he caused. If they wanted to stick with an actor who sounded like Biggs, then they should have let Catrambone be the permanent replacement. Every time someone replaces someone else in a role, fans should cut the replacement some slack. This program is in its third season and many episodes have already aired and I'm sure it was difficult for Green to make the role his own. The same thing happened to Linda Ballantyne, who replaced Terri Hawkes as Sailor Moon back in 2000. The show also had two other major cast changes when the original voices of Sailor Mercury and Sailor Venus also left the show. The voice of Sailor Mars only left for a little while at the end of the second season, but her replacement sounded just like her. The only lead actress to stay with the show from beginning to end was Susan Roman who voiced Sailor Jupiter.

Isn't jumping the shark when a show does something so off the wall its apparent the writers have nowhere for the story to go? I don't think that's happened. Nothing really out of context has happened. Even the mutation of Karai just adds another plot element as long as she's out there. Will she still be an ally? Will her mutation turn her against the turtles again? Can Donny find a cure? This show will jump the shark when you hit the point where you know the turtles will easily handle any threat they come across. One thing I like about this version is that the turtles don't overwhelm every opponent. They are teens who are still learning and it's obvious that some of their enemies are almost too much to handle.

Season 3 - A Foot Too Big - They jumped the shark with this one...
ShellBrain

Honestly... season 3, two episodes in, and I'm really not digging the episode/storyline set up... The first episode Raph is mutated into a weird plant-dog and just as quickly and easily fixed up - it was weak writing.

Episode 2... Big Foot, the Finger and... a make over... seriously... My problem with this, HOW DOES BIG FOOT KNOW WHAT THAT IS? Bleh... These episodes feel so contrived and silly... more so than usual, I understand its a kid's show, but before this season it still felt like it had an integrity about it, that made it likeable to a wider audience (and older people, like myself) -- Lately... its just felt so weak and dumbed down... I dunno... the episodes have some very likeable moments... and then they go and do things that make it very less than likeable... am I alone in thinking this? I also know, there's no point in even bringing it up, nothing will change... but it just feels to me like this show has lost something great, there felt like there was a care being put into each episode, even filler ones; up until now... Lately it feels like its just a watered down ninja turtles show solely for children to enjoy... I really hope we see a change, or else... well I'll just be moving on and I really don't want to... I just want some good writing again, like we had with season 2... :(

Just a humble rant from a very ninja turtle loving fan... please Ciro... bring back the greatness that was very present in season 2...

So... This was clearly written BEFORE 'The Deadly Venom' aired then. I watch the show with my daughter who's nearly 7, and she's never had to stop part way through an episode before, but by the time Leonardo and Donatello went looking for Karai, Raphael, Michaelangelo and Casey at the abandoned station, she had to stop because it was scaring and upsetting her. This episode was an example that the writers aren't afraid to take things to dark places, and the episode felt more high tension and claustrophobic because it wasn't the Kraang or some mutated monster... It was closer to home in the form of a mind controlled Karai. It's also proof that the writers realize that bringing in Karai makes for better viewing, and I doubt it's something that they're just going to drop now that we're veering towards the end of the season.

When I first heard Seth Green's voice as Leonardo, I was not impressed. I wouldn't say it jumped the shark though. I just don't get why Jason Biggs acts like a creep.
