Has TMNT (2012) officially "jumped the shark"?

With the whole Seth Green as Leonardo's new voice actor thing? Granted, I wouldn't be surprised if Jason Biggs got himself fired over his offensive behavior on Twitter, and Biggs hadn't bee doing Leo's voice in a while anyway (w/ Dominic Catrambone filling-in). It's just that the change (even if they lamp-shaded the change) is a bit too jarring, since Green's natural voice (not his "Chris Griffin voice") is much deeper than Biggs' and Catrambone's (Catrambone sounded somewhat like Biggs, even though his voice as Leo was slightly higher and more nasally).

I agree completely with you. I may not be able to adapt to his voice, which is disheartening. I was worried about it ever since I heard.

reply

Let me start off by saying I completely forgot Seth would be providing the voice for Leo. So when I watch the 3rd season premiere I felt Leo sounded weird and wrong. I couldn't put my hands on it but it was kinda jarring and nearly took me outta the episode. So I came here and was instantly reminded that Seth was voicing him now.
Oh brother Seth just comes off like Seth. I'm sorry I hope he can immerse himself into the character because right now it noticeably Seth. Just like his acting on FG where he's basically playing himself sounding dumb. Like we all have done with that basic impression.
TBH, it reminds me of that chick Cree Summers who sounds like every character she voice acts. Just uninspiring and noticeable. I hope Seth can do something interesting with Leo because with Biggs I never noticed it was him all that much.

Not ready to say jump the shark or even close to it though.

reply

I agree. I don't even like Jason Biggs, but his Leo was very well done. I like Seth Green, but he was not a good choice to replace, imho.

Seth Green's voice is too... Seth Green-y. (if that makes any sense)

Listen! Do you smell something?

reply

jaded_jester79, it makes sense to me. All I heard was Seth. I forgotten he was replacing Biggs and yet he sounded all wrong.

Still I'll give it some time and hope for the best. This has been the best version of the Turtles(for me) and I don't wanna give up now.

reply

Nobody will fill Jason Biggs' shoes, in spite of his disgusting personality. Catrambone was OK, but he never really got Biggs' charm down and made Leo sound too much like a videogame character with a much smaller range of emotions.

The only reason I'm accepting Green is because of the storyline reason they gave. Even then, the damage he sustained around his throat can't be permanent but I think Green is taking over for a while. I love him on Family Guy, but I just want Biggs back.

reply

I think you all have lost your minds!. They gave a explanation for it in the show and if I remember these forums wen Biggs was announced you all were upset . So you cant have everything. Just Roll with it a few weeks

reply

It seems that everything qualifies as 'jumping the shark' nowadays...
If you can get past Season 2 as a whole, you should be able to get past Seth Green.
It always takes some time to adapt to changes such as this.

Then again people are entitled to form their opinion and others have to deal. What Biggs did for Leo was immerse himself into the character. So far Seth just sounds like Seth and this coming from a person who totally forgotten that he was the "new" Leo. Hopefully things will work out.

reply

Biggs is apparently an ass, but he was the only person right for Leonardo in my eyes.

I'll get used to Green, especially because of the storyline reason they gave. But it's just not going to be the same.

Didn't say they didn't. Simply stated that the OP was blowing things way out of proportion.
Not as if it isn't true though. Someone's always screaming 'jumped the shark' almost all the time. At this point it's safe to say that they're jumping the gun.

Well I forgot it as well and it DID take me out of the ep, and yes it just sounds like Seth's natural voice.
But as u say, ppl are entitled to their opinion and others have to deal.
It was the opinion that Seth Green was to be the new Leo, and others like the ppl posting in this thread have to deal.
But if you asked me whether or not I'd prefer Jason Biggs back, I'd answer "HELL YES".
Biggs did get to start out as Leo so he could imbue a special charm into it in his own way that his replacements can't.
It usually doesn't work if a replacement has to copy the original, not to mention the fact that the replacement will usually be considered inferior.

Better to adjust Leo's personality so Seth Green can give his own spin rather than stay a copycat for the rest of the series.
Considering that Andrea Romano is still the Voice Director, I'm hoping she can get Seth adjusted to his role as soon as possible.
She did a superb job with her other projects.

I agree. Thanks for the reply.

I would say "Give it time". When someone has had throat damage, their voice usually is deeper, croakier, and rough-sounding. It's the perfect excuse to give Seth time to learn Leo a little better, up the pitch slightly, and bring some real expression back to him.

That said... thankfully we still have the three other original voices for Raph, Donnie, and Mikey to keep things going.

reply

You really need to look up what it means when a show "jumps the shark" because this isn't even remotely close and I guarantee the change of one voice actor would be the case of it. There has only been one frickin' episode so far into the 3rd season. Give it a little time. If after 10 eps you still don't like it I can understand your gripes then.

It was jarring for me to hear Leo's new voice, but by the end of the ep I was all in. I got use to it very quickly and didn't even notice it after about 10 minutes into the ep. The episode was great by the way.

What, the term "same character, different actor" or "The Other Darrin" isn't a form of "jumping the shark"!? 😞

reply

No.

A show called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" can jump the shark?

reply

They could have at least found someone who sounded more like Jason. There are some really talented voice actors out there that would've been a great fit. No offense to Seth, he's just wrong for the character.

reply

I agree with that statement. I cringe when better voice actors are pass over for celebrities.

reply

My question is how can anyone make that call after only one episode. I mean, you're not giving yourselves a chance to even get use to it. Some of you heard him speak one line and that's all it took for you to make up you minds? How do you know you won't feel differently after 10-15 eps?

reply

Agreed, Tag. By the midpoint of this season, once we've heard Seth's voice coming out of Leo's mouth enough, I think most of this will have died down so long as every character he comes across when they get back to New York isn't like "You sound different."

With it being such a stark change from Biggs' voice(and Dominic Catrambone's similar voice in the latter part of S2), though, I guess the immediate reaction is understandable. Part of it might be the fact that Leo was so un-Leo like due to his injuries and recovery, so adding that in with the voice it felt like a whole different character. Once he's back to kicking butt and taking names like what we're used to, I think the voice will start to blend in relatively seamlessly.

reply

Seth definitely sounds too different, so every time Leo talks, it feels out of place. However, I wouldn’t say that it has caused the show to “jump the shark”. I for one will continue to watch as long as Michaelangelo continues to be so adorable; his cute, naïve puerility is my favorite part of the show.

Here the thing, a show hasn't jumped the shark just because they did something you don't like. Obviously, they're going for slightly different type of Leo than we seen before. Which is good for character development as we don't want characters to stay the same from beginning to end. Of course, people have come accustomed to Jason's voice which why Leo's "sounds off". But just because Seth is different does NOT make it bad just some getting used to. Seth's Leo sounds more "world weary" and authoritarian which makes sense given all that his been through.
