Anyone else hate this show, but still watches it?

I've been a turtle fan since the 80s, but lately I've gotten really back into them. I'm in love with the IDW comics. This series is absolutely horrible. The art style, empty streets, terrible love interests subplot, and just how overly annoying April is period. Despite all that I still find myself watching it. I guess I just keep hoping it'll get better. Though I am looking forward to season 3, and the fact that Mondo Gecko will be introduced. Anywho, anyone else feel somewhat close to me on any of this?

Honestly, this show has turned me from a long time casual fan (as in watched the original show as a kid and the movies once or twice but never really got invested) to a full fledged fan.

I hear you about the empty streets but I'm pretty neutral about the April/Donnie subplot, though I like this version of April and don't mind that she's younger in this version. At first I was kind of iffy about the design and the CGI and overall style, but it quickly grew on me. I find this show to be a great blend of the humor of the original series and the darker tones of the 2003 series and comics. I think the voice cast is perfect and I really like this version of Splinter, mostly because he's so different from the other incarnations. Maybe it's because I wasn't a hardcore fan before the show started that I was more open to the changes, but I love this show. It's got me rewatching the original series and checking out the 2003 series (the only one I wasn't familiar with) and rewatching the movies and I'm hoping to start reading the comics soon.

The only thing I don't like (besides the empty streets which I forgive because of the time and money I'm assuming it costs) is how they made Mikey a complete absent minded idiot. For the most part, I love this version of Mikey, and I think Greg Cipes is perfect as him (Eastman even said he is the real life version of Michelangelo) but all too often he's written as incredibly stupid. He can be fun loving and goofy without being a total idiot, and the show has demonstrated what he's capable of, but often the writers forget all about by the next episode. I do like that he's finally been allowed some real character growth in the last few episodes though. I hope it carries over into season three because I'd be annoyed if his character regresses again. But I may be biased about that as Michelangelo has always been my favorite since I was little.

All in all though, I simply love this show. I'd rate it a solid 8 as it's not perfect, but it rarely disappoints.

I really like this series, but I understand what you mean. The art took me a minute to get used to. I noticed the empty streets and I figure there's never anyone around just because it'd be too much work for the animators to add New York appropriate crowds. April can be really annoying at times. The Donatello/April "romance" will probably start being phased out over the next season if I interpreted that part of the finale correctly. Unfortunately, we'll still be stuck with April/Casey, which I find to be more annoying. Some aspects of this version of Casey Jones are really dorky to me.

As for continuing to watch a show you don't like, I recently watched Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation on Netflix. All 26 episodes. It was painful.

That's impressive. I couldn't make it through the first ten minutes and I'm not normally the type to give up on something so quickly. If I start watching a movie or show, no matter how bad I usually stay until the end (and in the case of a TV show, I'll at least watch the entire pilot)just for the sake of knowing how it ends. But "The Next Mutation" was a special kind of awful.

After the pilot it seemed get slightly less crappy, but it was still pretty awful. It was all worth it though when I saw Donatello (or rather the actor in the suit) accidentally cop a feel on Venus. Nearly pissed myself.

I actually like that version of Casey is bit more dorky, I think Casey should have the right balance of being a cool badass and a lovable loser.

Then let's hope he becomes a cool badass at some point.

I'm actually starting to lose some interest in this series. Season 4 is becoming the Fast Forward season, only the annoying robot and the annoying kid have been merged into one character. I was hoping the crossover episode would bring me back, but it was just a heavily watered down version of Turtles Forever.

Unlike many other characters, I think Fugitoid is pretty spot on to how he is in the original comics. I don't find him annoying at all.

Absolutely horrible?

No redeeming qualities in the slightest?

No love for the Karai angle and the multitude of varying layers it serves for both plot and characters?

No love for ice cream kitty?

I feel sorry for you, it's as if you're missing out on one big party.

Plenty of '87 and '03 episodes to watch, though.

I mean I do enjoy it in a sinful way. Basically anytime I watch it I have to tell myself not to think like an adult. Far as Icecream Kitty, I find it funny but also really sad and creepy. Reminds me a little too much of the dog from Fly II. Basically the IDW comic spoiled me from anything else. I mostly only watch this show out of true blind fandom.

reply

Ah, there's your misstep. I can't imagine anyone enjoying the franchise with adult eyes. Even the comics require a bit of whimsical child charm.

I'm an adult and love the show. People whine about stuff that is way too minor. This show is far superior to that crap fest movie.

Being a fan of the 80s cartoon when I was a kid, I held off watching this show for a while (just finished season 1). I really didn't want to like it, but by the end of the first episode I was sold. The voice acting is fantastic, the animation won me over in minutes, it's funny and not in a really corny way like the 80s toon.

I checked out the 2003 series before this one, but I couldn't get into it because they made Raph sound like a Danny Devito wannabe (they're teenagers, not old crabby New York cab drivers ).

You're talking about.......me. 28 years old, and unrepentant lifetime Turtle fan. Haven't been able to bring myself to see the new movie, and I really do hate this show, and it's getting worse. But it's still slightly better than whatever else is usually on. The 2003 series (other than Back to the Sewers, Season 7) was surprisingly awesome. Lots of storylines from the comics.

You basically sound like me. This passed episode with April's mother was terrible, only that Icecream Kitty part made me laugh. I agree with you on everything else you said except the movie. Trust me it isn't great, but honestly it was bad either. I feel they'll up their game making the second movie.

I agree, I am forcing myself to sit through it as a turtles fan, I am almost finished with the first season, but I am seeing very little redeeming value. Sure there are a few funny moments, and a few ides that at least COULD have been interesting. Ultimately I am finding it too silly, and the Krang dialogue just grates on me.

Just an update, I am now in the third season, and I still find the show annoying, but kind of watchable. I am finding the episodes in this season less imaginative, and think they're spending waaaay too much time in the woods. Frankly, I find anyone trying to claim that this series has complex characters is trying too hard, and still stand by the 2003 series as the best.

I feel the opposite-ish way about the show; I didn’t like it at first because the graphics felt cheap and it was too different from the 80’s version which I grew up with, but it eventually grew on me. I watch it now because I like it now and because Michaelangelo is so adorable in this version.

I agree. As a tmnt fan I decided to get through it, having previously seen a few random episodes and thought it cute but too kiddiefied to be bothered with. A lot of fan praise made take another look, but so far not seeing how people can compare this to Batman TAS or say this is better than the 2003 series.

Granted, I only in season 1 so far of my complete watch through, but the empty streets, the annoying Kraang and throwbacks to the 80s cartoon aren't good IMO. One thing that gets me is the episode where they are so worried about Mikey returning a cat to its human owner yet let him befriend a celebrity martial artist? I thought they are supposed to stick to the shadows? that guy could tell the world about them instantly and none of them (not even Splinter) was concerned at all.

I love this version of the Turtles the most, even as much as I love the original cartoon, first two live action films, and the 2007 CGI movie and Turtles Forever.

The only thing I don't like about this new Ninja Turtles series is the lack of information surrounding when new episodes will air on Nickelodeon. I have to check episode guides to find out, and those usually aren't updated until one or two days before airtime. Sometimes Nick will release episodes early, and that's good, but otherwise the airing of episodes is sporadic. The official 2012 fb and twitter pages rarely ever post this info either.

Just wanted to edit this post and add that the official TMNT twitter account has tweeted that new episodes resume Jan. 10th:
