The talk about Deniro's legacy is so weird

Why do all these people think that he should have to care about maintaining his legacy from 2 decades ago? He's considered one of the greatest actors of all time, he's got 2 Oscars, he's worth 200 mill. If I was his age after that kind of career I'd totally just do movies where I make millions to make out with and get dry humped by Aubrey Plaza or other hot young actresses. It's so weird to see people saying that he should just stop acting because they don't enjoy him anymore. As if he gives a *beep* about impressing anyone with his acting anymore

Sounds about right. I find it laughable how people talk about his work like he owes them something. It's his fvcking career and just like everyone else he can do with it whatever he goddamn wants. I say, if he wants to do this kind of movie, good for him. Nobody HAS to love everything he does.

Not sure why so many of the replies say this...I didn't see anyone disputing whether he has the RIGHT to do whatever he wants. He can join up with Adam Sandler and make a bunch of Billy Madison sequels for all I care.
The point is, many of would see the cast list in a movie, and if Robert DeNiro was listed, give it a good look since he's a good actor and has done some quality movies. Now, after viewing one pretty mediocre "Old people can be really cool" movie (The Intern), he makes this pile of garbage. Next time I see his name in the cast, will I assume it's probably a good movie worth looking into? Probably not.

Nobody said he didn't have the right to make crap movies aimed at the 12-year-old mentality...of course he does. But most people, having made positive accomplishments over their life, develop some pride in their work well-done.

Let's say that (I'll call him Bob) Bob's furniture store has been around locally for many years, and they've always been known for well-made, high quality furniture, and we've always been very happy with what we bought there. Then I go in and buy a table, and get it home and notice it's particle board, and stapled together. Oh well, probably just a fluke. Next time I go in and order a bedroom set, and they show up with some pressed cardboard stuff they got at Walmart and stuck together with a glue gun.

Now Bob certainly has the right to sell that stuff, and maybe some are happy he's doing it because it's cheaper than it used to be. But I won't be going back, nor will I recommend his "work" to anyone any more, because he's no longer deserving of the respect he once had. Yes, he DID make great, solid-wood lovingly built furniture, finished to perfection, now he makes and sells crap, regardless of what he "was".

It's not a question of whether he has the right to sell the junk. Or, whether he's "earned" the right, because most people I know who are proud of what they do, would like to maintain that pride they've built in a job well done. This movie is so bad I can't imagine how any decent actor would want to be associated with it, unless he's going through some sort of crisis and has lost his judgment.

I probably won't bother going to DeNiro's next movie, but he's welcome to make all he wants.

Fans have always been a necessary evil in mass media, but the largely open and anonymous nature of the internet tends to make matters worse. It fools people... gives them completely unwarranted levels of gall.

Don't get me completely wrong, I can somewhat understand. Lowly randoms like you or I or 99.999% of the people that will ever read this will die and be completely and eternally forgotten within a generation or two.... We will make zero impact at all on the culture as a whole... But on the internet, we can make laughable claims... puff out our chests... Patently absurd things like even a dozen missteps somehow tarnishes DeNiro's work in Raging Bull or Goodfellas or whatever else. Irrational, personal, unrealistic... fan expectations always crumble into absurdity... and almost universally reveal more about the fan then they do the artist.

Close the laptop lid as soon as such an urge hits. Enjoy things or not on their own merit and move along... Your favorite band will eventually lose their creative fastball... they'll put out lackluster albums to fulfill record label obligations and yet refuse to play the classics in half-filled minor league hockey arenas.... And DeNiro will eventually utter the term "ni**a" during an Ice Cube karaoake scene.

Totally agree with you.

Nevermind what movies he makes, looks like he is in the process of becoming the new face of the anti-vaxxer movement :'(

This is an interesting topic. Personally, I'm so fond of him from The Godfather onward that I'm probably biased and end up enjoying anything he's in, period. LOL

As for the choices, maybe he wants a break? He's known to be a fairly hardcore method actor who pretty much becomes the character--even off-screen--to deliver the best performance on-screen...lordy his poor wife(ves) *lol* But all jokes aside, it's probably so bloody taxing mentally and emotionally, while these roles he could do in his sleep no doubt. We can call these recent ventures a vacation ;)

I don't do signatures. ^_^

He doesn't have a legacy anymore. Without Scorsese he wouldn't have even had a career. He needs to give Marty a reach-around at least once a week. What a washed up slub.

Maybe he's battling being typecasted, like many other actors deal with. I mean when I think Deniro, I automatically think of a semi-comedic mob/government personality.

Don't you think a guy like Deniro wants a challenge? Don't you think someone with such a great legacy, after decades of fame, may want to try new things before dying?

I disagree, but I have been laughing for 5 minutes straight. OMG, I was not expecting that. Can't breathe...thank you!
