The talk about Deniro's legacy is so weird

Why do all these people think that he should have to care about maintaining his legacy from 2 decades ago? He's considered one of the greatest actors of all time, he's got 2 Oscars, he's worth 200 mill. If I was his age after that kind of career I'd totally just do movies where I make millions to make out with and get dry humped by Aubrey Plaza or other hot young actresses. It's so weird to see people saying that he should just stop acting because they don't enjoy him anymore. As if he gives a *beep* about impressing anyone with his acting anymore

reply

Look, most people saying these things are his fans. We're on his side, we know he's capable of so much more. Think of it like a huge innovator in business who makes some of the best inventions in the world for part of their career then just suddenly gives up and goes to work at Taco Bell, folding burritos and getting stoned on lunch break.

We like Deniro and while we know he's free to do whatever he wants, I think people just want to see him flex his acting chops again a few more times before it's all over.

reply

He's an actor. Let him act.

Sometimes he will act dramatically strong and bring the feels -- like in Awakenings.

Sometimes he will make you laugh in stupid stuff -- like Meet The Parent, or apparently this.

Geez are folks like you also critical of Sir Patrick Stewart in Extras, when he mocked himself and especially his uber-serious image, by playing so against type?

wait, you're not his current agent are you?

lmao

People disrespect him for it, but I don't really care. Everyone does a couple bad movies, and maybe he just wants to do movies that are fun to be in.

reply

A couple?

reply

Agree. He has nothing to prove as he's already accomplished so much. Doing these fun movies have less pressure and he's still making money. At his age he can just relax and have fun.

reply

Not fun for the audience.

reply

he can take a vacation for that. if he's worth 200m he doesn't really need the money.

reply

Well, his legacy is already damaged and has been for about 20 years, so it doesn't really matter at this point if he keeps making sh it films. His great films and performances will live on forever, but so will the all the crap he produced over and over again late in his career and unfortunately, he will be remembered for both.

reply

The thing is, everyone under 30 thinks Robert DeNiro is this naff comedy actor. Everyone over 30 knows he's the most powerful film actor since Brando.

reply

well wouldn't say "the most powerful" since Brando. maybe one of.
pacino outranks him even if we compare deniro at his best and has managed to maintain his dignity as opposed to deniro.

I guess I'm in the few that doesn't give a damn that Robert Dinero is doing a movie like this. But I have to empathize, and think about a favourite actor of mine doing a tone of movies for a while and then breaking off and doing movies like these. And in that, i can see where the disdain and disappointment comes from.

I see two sides of a coin. On one side, if an favourite actor of mine - let's say Denzel Washington - had a serious tone of movies and then all of a sudden started doing the "Seth Rogan" type comedy, I'd probably be shocked. I don't think I'd be complaining on here about it, but it'd definitely raise eyebrows. On the other side, Robert Dinero is an actor doing what he enjoys, and he's had a long, luxurious career. Full of longevity. Maybe he just wants to have fun, and break away from the serious tone, for once. He doesn't want to do all serious movies, and that's OK. I'm sure he's come to a point in his life where he just wants to be spontaneous and do something different for himself, not for you guys as fans, but for himself.

And if you don't like it, don't watch it. Nothing about his career is damaged or "tainted". Rob from 70's-90's is clearly different from 00-present. And I'll still enjoy Taxi, Casino, Goodfella's etc the same way I did before watching this movie.

reply

There is no "damage of legacy"

He made great movies. Now he's making comedies which he finds fun and make people smile.

I very much doubt he gives a seconds thought to any "legacy" while he enjoys his highly successful career doing something he loves, and staggeringly huge amount of money.

why should anybody watch him if he's doing it for the reasons you mention? what's in it for us? sh ite movies? well thanks for that.

and no, the talk about legacy is not weird, of course people are going to think "how did this happen?". are you not disappointed when a band you loved for the longest time gets worse and worse, putting out bad album after bad album? it's just depressing.

reply

Couldn't have put it better myself.

As a big time fan of his, it is pretty disappointing to see him do crap like this. It doesn't change the greatness of his earlier films obviously. What it does do is make it so a big time De Niro fan who wants to pay to see films that he is in, have to say; "you know I am gonna save my money instead of seeing him be in crap."

As a fan it is too bad, because there are so many types of films I would love to see him in.

reply

Whether he cares about proving his acting ability is irrelevant. At one time, seeing DeNiro's name in a movie was a pretty good indication of quality. Now, after this disaster, he's dropped to such a low point that it puts him, to me, in about the same category as Adam Sandler, with about the same expectation of quality.

I literally left about 2/3 through this movie...what a stupid, childish plot...and for a seasoned actor who used to be associated with quality movies and great acting?

I'm wondering if he's going through a second or late mid-life crisis. That's the only way I can rationalize this childish movie, which seems to be somewhere between Billy Madison and The Hangover 2 or 3. Second grade humor with adult subject matter.

I know that college kids think that every 70-year-old wishes they could do what the college kids do, but when they grow up most figure out that party-hearty do-every-drug screw-everything-in-sight really isn't much of a fulfilling life. Why would he even accept these parts if he wasn't at some insecure, crisis stage? Childish unfunny movie, cheap humor, predictable plot, nothing new, waste of time.

I'd suggest waiting until it comes out on DVD, then waiting until someone else buys it to go over and try to watch it, if you're anything older mentally than immature college age. If you love fart and butt humor, this may be just to your liking. DeNiro, let us know if you grow up again.

reply

Seems like the basic storyline of this movie is not "70 year old WISHES to be like the college kids" but more like "70 year old lived a typical serious adult life, and now that the sex-denying spouse has died he's looking to have a bit of fun for a while again".

Where's the harm? This movie is not saying "all 70 year olds want to be like this 24/7".

That's not the plot of the movie actually.

Also the movie was funny. Anyone who disagrees is a boring prude who is wasting their life being too serious, and one day they will learn a lesson from the very plot of this movie. To not be a boring tool like the lawyer and waste your life, but to instead live and enjoy it.
