Is it just me or was there a significant amount of Apocalypse Now influence in this?
Not a complaint by any means - much like the original Blade Runner, Apocalypse Now is easily on my top 5 list.
While watching this, it really struck me with how much Apocalypse Now seems to have influenced this film:
- Joe (Ryan Gosling) really is similar to Willard from Apocalypse Now: an introverted type of guy with heavy psychological issues that have been made worse by the work they have done as assassins.
- The consistent talk of Deckard throughout the earlier parts leading up to when he is finally revealed much later in the film really mirrors how Kurtz is consistently talked about during Apocalypse Now leading up to when he finally appears in the later part of the film.
- When Joe meets Deckard for the first time, the lighting and hue of the scene strongly resembles the lighting and hue of the scene in Apocalypse Now when the PBR boat finally reaches Kurtz's compound in Cambodia.
- The fact that despite Willard/Joe accomplishing what they sent out to do, each film respectively ends in an ambiguous way for Joe and Willard: Joe laying down in the snow and Willard leaving the compound in the dead of night in the PBR boat.
